Hi Everyone –
This is my first posting! My fiance and I are desperately trying to find a beautiful, non-wedding-factory location for our reception. We thought we had it totally wrapped up in Bayonet Farm in Holmdel (which is very close to my parents) but the barns were way too small to comfortably accommodate close to 150 guests. A tented reception could work, but I questioned the reasoning behind renting the venue just to stay under the tent all night.
We then found Prallsville Mills, which is close to The College of New Jersey where we met some eight years ago. Its a beautiful location and we’re very happy with it – however I know that there is an exclusive contract with Brillman’s Rental Barn and they require all rentals to go through them – including the caterers needs.
Does anyone know how expensive this will be? They have no prices on their website and they were very illusive when asked directly.
I have a healthy budget for the wedding but definitely not extravaggant by any means. I’d love to be able to invest in great photography and amazing entertainment, but I fear that Brillman’s will find ways to charge us an arm and a leg – I read one horror story of someone getting an inflated bill the day of the wedding with charges never before discussed.
Any experiences with the venue and the rental vendor and suggestions on caterers or photographers would be welcome!!

@dovely: I am sorry I don’t have any answers for you, but I am wondering if you found out more since you posted? I am considering prallsville mills as well for my wedding and only have about 15k to spend.

@miss_esq: Sorry I didn’t see this sooner.
We DID have our wedding there. Brillmans was incredibly difficult to work with. They are nice enough people but they don’t know how to answer very straight forward questions. It added a lot to my anxiety level. I was a really easy going bride, but they seriously pushed me to my limits.
Our wedding was Sept 1st and it was HOT. It was in the highish 80s but it felt like a million degrees in the mill. The AC was running but it may as well not have been. I would not suggest having a summer wedding here – it would be very uncomfortable. Most of our guests were fine with it – we were all a sweaty mess but we had a BLAST!
We decorated the mill to the nines and it looked amazing – but it was a ridiculous amount of work. Not being allowed in the night before to decorate is just stupid. Who has an extra 800+ dollars to rent it for the night before too? It put a lot of stress on my parents to figure out how to get everything there and back in one day. I had to pay someone to put up all the decorations and I was there in my $2k wedding dress at the end of the night cleaning up.
The place was gorgeous – so very us – and my family loved it and had a blast – so in the end it was worth it, but it was really emotionally taxing at the time. If you aren’t a cool and level headed person – it may be too much for you to handle without a wedding planner.
Also – I’m not sure honestly if this is the most budget friendly place. We invited 200 people, and 135 came (Labor Day weekend). The reception cost us well over $30k (and a lot more if you include all the hotel rooms and rehearsal and brunch etc etc etc).
If you have a small wedding – it would be much more doable.
Also – Emily’s Catering is worth every penny. Lovely to work with. Adored them.
if anyone is interested in buying stuff from our wedding, I’m selling a lot of stuff here: http://newjersey.craigslist.org/for/3366486740.html
