“The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory B. Jaczko, said Monday that the plume posed no danger to the United States. “You just aren’t going to have any radiological material that, by the time it traveled those large distances, could present any risk to the American public,” he said in a White House briefing.

Mr. Jaczko was asked if the meltdown of a core of one of the reactors would increase the chance of harmful radiation reaching Hawaii or the West Coast.

“I don’t want to speculate on various scenarios,” he replied. “But based on the design and the distances involved, it is very unlikely that there would be any harmful impacts.”

wow.. didnt realize that it could come so far.  *crosses fingers*

@runsyellowlites: i like the part of the article that says that the radiation exposure would be equivalent to that of a TSA screening, make me wonder how much exposure we get THERE? ><;;

As someone who lived right next to Chernobyl during that disaster, I just have to shake my head at this.  The American media just loooves overdramaticizing things and creating a panick.  I guess that’s how they sell the news.  And here is California, where at the first sign of drizzel we call a storm watch, it’s magnified enumerably.

We’ll be just fine.  You would be exposed to more radiation sitting in a window seat on a plane than you will be from this.

@Meowkers:  Thank you, I was just about to type something similar (except I didn’t live near Chernobyl).

@Meowkers: The media likes to keep folks scared. It’s easier to control them.

@Meowkers:

I was thinking the same. The media frenzy is insane.

I take x-rays, I’m probably in more immediate danger than anyone in the U.S. right now.

Poor Japan though. My heart goes out. I seriously can’t wrap my mind around the devistation.
