- Wedding: February 2013
I had a situation this week and I am curious now. I came from the US to Europe when I married my husband. A diamond fell out of my wedding band last Thursday and I’d been planning to get a new band anyway, so I figured it was a good time to take the dive. The next day I went to a jeweler I’d seen in our neighborhood and tried on the few rings I’d had my eye on. I had no idea what my ring size should be and didn’t have my wedding ring with me for reference. The owner used one of those sizer things and it seemed to fit right at the time, so he ordered the ring I wanted for the next day.
So Saturday morning I went to pick up the new ring. It seemed a bit big, but I thought, “It’ll be good in the summer when my fingers swell with the heat.” So I left with the ring. As I tried to go on with my day, I kept looking at it and questioning the look and feel of it. It just didn’t seem right as the time passed. When I got home, I looked up a ring size conversion chart and saw that this ring is 1 full size bigger than my wedding ring, which is already 1/2 a size bigger than my actual size. The jeweler was closed, so I put the new ring back in it’s box.
I sent an email to the owner on Sunday (everything here is closed on Sundays) to let him know that it was too big and I was going to bring it in to exchange for the correct size. I didn’t hear from him by Monday, so I went to the store. It was closed. I still didn’t hear from him by Tuesday, so I went back again and gave him the ring for exchange. He had a major attitude about it and was insisting on sizing the ring rather than exchanging it. I told him I didn’t want it sized. It’s not the type of ring that can be easily sized. The twisted design accross the top of the band cannot be changed and the design on the bottom of the band is special as well. It would be ruined by sizing.
The owner completely dismissed me and said he’d see what he could do and to come back Friday. I made sure to take something with the store’s phone # on it befre I left – if any of you were wondering why I emailed him – none of the #’s listed for the store online are the correct #. I left the store feeling annoyed and really put out. I called shortly after to re-iterate that I did NOT want the ring sized. He AGAIN dismissed me and said, “No, it will be perfect. You will never know, okay?” and he hung up on me. I seriously didn’t even know what to do at this point. I hate confrontation and I don’t like being rude to people. This man was really pushing it, though! I only got 1/2 a night of sleep because it took me ages to fall asleep. I had major anxiety over the whole situation and the way he treated me.
Wednesday morning I called back and he answered as if I’d woken him up. I made it very clear that I don’t want the ring sized and asked about his exchange and return policy. I told him that all retail stores have some kind of policy in writing and usually you get 30-90 days for these things. He told me that maybe in America that’s how it is, but not here. Apparently, “We don’t do that here.” – which is total BS. And my husband agreed. I have done plenty of shopping here and every receipt for retail shops has the policy and last date possible to return/exchange on it. The owner went on to say, “Would you want to wear a ring after someone else has worn it for a day?” He was yelling at me…
He finally said he would exchange the ring for me. But he was yelling at me for no reason and being incredibly rude. I go to pick it up tomorrow. I am wondering now, though. Would any of you be that bothered if you found out your ring was returned after a day of wear because it was the wrong size for the person? I don’t see what the problem is with this. It’s not dirty. It’s not damaged. I didn’t keep it for 5 months and suddenly decide that I wanted a new ring. In actuality, I wore it for about 1/2 a day and then it went back in the box. I have bought antique jewelry. I have bought jewelry straight out of the jewelry case. How many people have worn those rings? How is it so horrible? As long as it’s pretty, reasonably priced, and good quality, what do I care? What do you all think?
