My friend has hyper-thyroid and had an appt maybe 8 months before they got pregnant. They started trying pretty soon after. Her thyroid has been all over the place with her pregnancy (now about 6m in) and her meds are wildly inaccurate. She is going for monthly checks to adjust it, but it’s never accurate. She is looking forward to the baby being out so she can be back on a regular schedule again.

It didn’t hinder their conception or anything, she’s just had a rough pregnancy all round and that didnt help.

when we very first visited our new OB about trying for kids, they did a few blood tests and said my thyroid looked off and to see a specialist. It took a FULL YEAR on thyroid medication before i got into the normal range. It then took about 4 months of fertility drugs to become pregnant.

Now im not certain if my thryoid is what prevented me from becoming pregnant, because right around the time it started to become normal we started fertility drugs, but i was told by both the thyroid Dr and the fertility doctor that it can play a big part.

spallas14 :  definitely see a doctor and start treating your thyroid now, especially if you’re hypothyroid.  Even if you get pregnant without treatment for the thyroid you have a higher chance of miscarriage until your thyroid is controlled with medicine. Once pregnant you’ll have to go see your doctor more often for regular blood draws to make sure your medicine doesn’t need to be adjusted as pregnancy tends to put a strain on your thyroid and often your medicine dose will be increased.

spallas14 :  no problem! Most endos will want you to be leaning towards hyper so that once you get your BFP it’ll be easier to adjust the medicine to keep your tsh in the optimal range.

spallas14 :  femara. Our fertility Dr. preferred it over clomid due to side effects, apparently femara has less. To note though my thyroid levels were almost triple above to what the normal range would be, before starting medication for it.
