@candy: omg, congrats!!! what day was she born? and how is week 1 going for you?
I also had my baby! Josephine was born on 11/9, exactly one week early the birth:
I had felt totally normal all day last Thursday. Spent the afternoon working at a coffee shop, then went on a long walk. That evening, I had one mild but distinct contraction at around 8:45pm lasting about a minute. It was the first real contraction I’d ever experienced. Then had another 20 min later. I mentioned it to Darling Husband, but was like “i’m sure it’s nothing, these are barely painful.” Then I needed to poop. Went to do that and had some bloody show! Still was thinking it’s probably days away from the big event. Then I stood up and felt a gush of fluid…undeniably water breaking! It was surreal how quickly it all happened. Told dh it’s go time…we got our stuff together, I shoved like 30 paper towels in my pants cause my waters were continuing to come out in squirts and gushes, and we went to the hospital.
They checked me and confirmed water had broken…but I was only 1cm and 50% effaced, humph. Wasn’t having much in the way of contractions…maybe 4 or 5 in like 2 hrs and nothing I couldn’t laugh my way through. I was feeling a bit smug like what’s the big deal? Labor is easy, I got this!
Then they started the pitocin, aka the devils juice, and I was soon eating humble pie. They told me to expect it could take 24 hrs just to get into active labor cause I was barely dilated, so I prepared mentally for the long haul. Pretty soon though contractions were hitting every 90 sec or 2 min and were no longer amusing! They got worse and worse and I tried to tough it out, but around 3am was begging for the epi. Got checked the epi around 3:30. Was checked again around 5am and was 3cm and 80% effaced. Doctor was pleased with progress but still thought it would be that night or the following morning before I delivered.
Epi = effing magic by the way…was immediately angry at myself for trying to resist it even one second lol. Never again! Epi = lyfe!!
Anyway they told me they wouldn’t check me again til I felt the urge to push because due to waters breaking, there’s an increased risk of infection and the fewer hands up my vag the better. But about 90 min later they decided to check me because I was having a ton of bloody show and feeling a lot of pressure…and I was suddenly fully dilated and ready to push!!!! No one could believe I went from 3-10 that fast since it’s my first!
We waited for my OB to get to the hospital and then it was go time. Pushed for about an hour – felt like 15 hours, holy shit they don’t call it “labor” for nothing!!! – and then somehow she was here! Just had two little 1st degree tears up high.
Josephine came out with the cord wrapped around her neck once but within a few seconds she was crying and doing well. Did immediate skin to skin for an hour or so. She is a tiny thing at 6lb exactly and 19.5in.
Unfortunately she developed jaundice the next day and had to go under the lights and stay an extra day at the hospital, which was really rough. We were finally able to take her home Monday with a portable bilirubin light. Had our first pediatrician appt Tues and she is already back up to her birth weight! Baby girl likes to eat 🐷🐷🐷.
Shes still under the bili blanket which is so annoying to deal with, but we are so happy to be home with her. can’t wait for all the other rainbows to arrive!!
