She may be having a bit more trouble conceiving than you know, which could account for her lukewarm response.  She may need time to process that someone else is getting what she wants.  Infertility can be a heartbreaking, lonely road.

Or she could have just been tempering her reaction since 6 weeks is still very early.

@twistxofxfate:  I would just leave her alone. If she’s older than you, has been married longer, and has been actively trying, it’s obviously going to sting a bit.

I don’t know what you could tell her to make things better for her, and I think you already have plenty of people who are thrilled for you. She’ll come around, but give it time.

@twistxofxfate:  Congratulations!!! I’m 8 weeks today and I haven’t told anyone yet! Just myself and my Fiance know πŸ˜‰

I’m sure she is just jealous or maybe she is upset because she is having trouble TTCing? She is the older sister and has been married for awhile so maybe she thought she was supposed to be first? You also gave your family some happiness in this time of grief, she could be jealous of that too.

Either way I wouldn’t worry about it, give her some time. If things stay the same in the next month than bring it up πŸ™‚

@twistxofxfate:  Just give her time. She might be jealous but ultimately she’ll love her neice or nephew no matter what.

When my younger sister got pregnant (on accident) everyone kept asking if I felt jealous. I didn’t, but apparently it’s common enough that people expected me to.

@twistxofxfate:  I normally hate to say that people are jealous over things, but this time it’s probably the case. Do you know why they stopped trying before? Maybe it has been a more emotionally trying journey for them than they’ve let on. It’s something that’s easy to feel upset over for that reason. Try to put your hurt/surprised feelings away and look at her in a compassionate light. I’m sure that she IS happy for you, and she will adjust to the news in time.

Congratulations btw!

@twistxofxfate:  firstly YAY for someone else on here being in new zealand!!! I often think I the only one!!!!! πŸ˜€

maybe its jealously? She’s probably happy for u but may be upset that she’s not pregnant herself? Especially since u are younger , I don’t have sisters but for some reason my friends older sisters have acted a bit “off” when my friends have gotten engaged or pregnant before them…..

she’ll come around, is so cool your prefnant!!!!  congrats!!!!!

@twistxofxfate:  Oh man. I thought of a more positive reason…what if she IS pregnant as well? Maybe she was taken by surprise and was just considering about how to time her news. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for this.

@HisMoon:  +1 that would be awesome! Maybe she is upset because she is PG too and was going to say something but you beat her too it!

@twistxofxfate:  Totally not questioning why you’d choose to share now, but even my own mom was pretty cautious about getting too excited when I told her before the “magic 12 week mark”.  I certainly hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months, but I think a lot of people don’t want to get their hopes totally set this early.  Even in my own mind that early it was more “I’m pregnant at the moment” than “we’re GOING to have a baby!” until it got a little further along.
