Have you thought about renting a maternity formal dress? There are several companies that do this and it’s in your price range, where buying a formal maternity dress might be more than you wanted to spend. Check out this company, they have nice things. http://www.bellybumpboutique.com/

Empire waist is probably your best bet – some of the more fitted maternity dresses I have/borrowed didn’t fit at all until late in the 3rd trimester because they had a big pouch in front that I wasn’t filling in 🙂  For empire waist you can either go maternity or just to a normal store…..just make sure it is a “real” empire waist because pseudo ones won’t last you as long!  And get them a bit on the roomy side if you can….

I have a wedding to go to this week and I’ve only just started to show… I picked up a really cute summer dress at Motherhood Maternity {they’re have store locations + an online shop} for under $40. You said casual, so I’d definitely check them out! Granted you might have to wait a few weeks for fall-weight clothes to start coming in.

And no, you don’t need to be really showing for most mat dresses to fit! The ones I tried on were either empire waist or just long and flowy.

Good luck!

Empire waist all the way! Try a flowy fabric like chiffon to hide your bump if you want. 🙂

One of my bridesmaids is pregnant and she found a great dress from Motherhood Maternity and it was only $20 or something really reasonable like that.
