Didn’t really hear of this concept until recently. I doubt that Dh (Fi at the time of the pregnancy and birth last year) ever heard of it either. Besides, we’re not that high on the income scale.
Plus, because the EDD was ON his birthday last year, there was a chance that he’d be spending it at the hospital waiting for me to give birth. (However, the kiddo wasn’t born until two days after via an induction…a process that started at six in the morning; I was in labor for 15 hours and 17 minutes.)

I have never heard of this. I don’t think I would be thinking about a gift, and I’d probably be wanting to save money for the baby! I can’t really think of anything I would want, either. Though some of the food and drink options bees have mentioned sound good!

My husband and I have a long running joke that he’s going to buy me a smoker as a push present. Not because we think giving birth really deserves gifts, but because the idea of commemorating the birth of a child with a smoker just is really us (we fell in love over barbeque). We could easily afford one right now and I would love to be able to smoke brisket this summer, but I’m looking at it as the last frivolous thing my husband’s probably going to buy me for a long time and I really want to wait for the special occasion (it will double as my birthday present a week later). We’re also spending a bit more than usual on my husband’s birthday present this year and buying the stereo equipment he’s been eyeing as his last “splurge” before we become parents.
It may sound strange to spend money on “wants” rather than “needs” with a baby on the way, but we know we’re going to have a hard time feeling comfortable buying anything non-essential once the baby arrives. It’s not going to be that we can’t afford things, but more that we’ll always think of a way the money could be better spent.
Just wondering…is it still “mindless consumerism” as one PP put it if it’s a purchase we can totally afford but have put off for years because we wanted to save it for a special occasion?

I don’t expect one, but I definitely wouldn’t turn one down either. I don’t know if I would call it a push present because that sounds funny to me for some reason.
