I skipped the belly bands entirely… I used the “hair tie through the button hole” trick a lot, wore dresses more often, and leggings* with tunic tops or sweater dresses.

I also picked up a few maternity tank tops that I could wear over the top of my pants under shirts so my pants didn’t slouch down if they were undone.

Also, it might not be a terrible idea to pick up a few basic staples in a maternity section… Target has some pretty basic inexpensive pieces, and I also hit the Kohl’s and Motherhood Maternity sales racks.

I tried the belly bands and they were awful… they kind of roll up and down when you sit down.

Give them a try, maybe they will work for you but they did not for me!

I did the hair tie – and then I just went ahead and got maternity work pants EARLY – like as soon as my high waisted dress pants got a tiny bit uncomfortable i went and got black, grey, and brown pants!!   They are so comfortable that I dont even change into sweat pants when I get home from work! lol

ETA:  I used the Target brand I think it was Bella?

I actually really liked the target brand – bebands, I think they were called. I got one in white and one in black.  I wore them over work pants and jeans from around 15 weeks through 26 weeks or so, when I finally reached a point where I really needed to wear full on maternity pants. Before 15 weeks I did the hair elastic through the button hole trick, which worked pretty well. Might depend on body type how well they work?

I swear by my Bella Bands.  My husband bought me three for Christmas and I wear them all the time.  It has saved me a ton of money in both jeans and dress pants.  I also think they are really comfortable and smoothed me out when I was in that weird stage where you just look fat.  Now, at 5 months, they still allow me to wear pre-preg pants (although I do have a few pairs of maternity pants).

@lilbluebird:  I am assuming the regular ones because he bought them on Amazon.  They were a little pricey (like $30) but I definitely wear them enough to make up for the cost.  I also like that they allow me to get away with most of my pre-preg tops as well.  The length is long enough that they look like you just have a cami on underneath.  That way, even though my bump has made my shirts shorter, they still look cute.

The bands worked great for me and added an extra layer of “smoothing” over my bloat.  I liked the target brand.

I started wearing my bella band(bought on Amazon) pretty early on (9 weeks?), but now even that feels kindof tight and my yoga pants are even tight(25 weeks tomorrow)! My thighs have gotten a bit thicker, so my old jeans even with the Bella band are not that comfortable. So I went to Motherhood Maternity and got two pairs of maternity jeans… those things are life-savers! SOOO comfortable. 🙂 The “secret fit belly” ones I got feel super soft and stretchy.

I got the belly band from Target and it’s saved my life! Ok, not really… But I love it! I only got one around 12 weeks because the bloat got crazy and I shrunk my pants in the dryer the same week and could no longer button! I couldn’t do the elastic through the button hole because my dress pants have hooks. Around 13 weeks, I couldn’t zip them either and the belly band was long enough to cover that up as well. I’m 15 weeks now and I feel like I could wear my normal pants for at least another month with the band! Haven’t had an issue with rolling. I’m a size 6 and got the S/M size. Agree with PP that it helps smooth things out as wel!
