So, here’s the situation: after 15 months we got a complete surprise BFP last week, and I’m currently 5 weeks pregnant (yaye! ). The problem? Next week we are going to the cottage for a week with our friends. Since I will only be 6 weeks I’m not ready to share yet…but I also have no excuse for why I won’t be drinking all week. To give you an idea, we planned theme nights every night around drinking (Mexican Mondays with margaritas – don’t judge, it’s my vacation! ). Plus, our friend is a nurse, so if I say I’m on antibiotics she’ll ask why, for what, etc etc
So I need help with a lie!

Say you’ve been having acid reflux and your doctor has advised you to try laying off alcohol for a few weeks to see if it helps. This is a real thing.

Tell your friends that you’re trying to cut calories in order to lose weight?
This is so true! When I was having gall bladder issues I had terrible reflux and any alcohol made it worse.
Or, could you be in charge of the drinks and make a batch of virgin ones for you?
Edit: How rude of me – congratulations! I had read about your struggles and I’m glad you finally got your BFP!

It depends on how much of a partier/drinker you usually are. If I suddenly stopped drinking while on vacation, there’d be nothing I could say that wouldn’t arose suspicion.

I was able to hide my non-drinking by “mixing” the cocktails myself and bringing Ginger Beer (which is NA, but my in-laws are blissfully clueless). If you are in tight quarters and you have nosy friends-like I do, you might have to come clean or get harrassed all weekend. Good luck and congratulations!

The usual one that you are driving is out because you are staying, as would heavy night before if it is a week
- You have become a Mormon or Muslim
- Health detox/diet, but you would have to follow that through as well the rest of the time, no cake, bread etc
- Doctor thinks you have gallstones and alcohol isn’t recommend
- The antibotics could still work. Say you are taking Metronidazole for a vaginal infection (not yeast) You can’t drink at all with that (it is also for other infections internally) But would your friend want to see the box? I doubt it but you know her
- Urine infection that you didn’t want to take A-Bs for but alcohol is bad for, buy cranberry juice for that one to work
- Say you are still TTC and your Ob suggested cutting out alcohol

Congrats on your BFP and I love your “don’t judge, it’s my vacation” comment. I like PP’s acid reflux idea or mixing a virgin batch of everything.
Also (I’m *kind of* joking here), you can tell them that you downed something that you didn’t realize was liquor and it caused you to not be able to stomach anything even remotely alcohol containing. Get graphic if they get too pushy! Tell them that you puked your shirt, you hair, had a headache for 2 days after, had night sweats, whatever gross and graphic details you want to give, and that you can see others doing it, but the thought of that wretched experience makes you go numb because it’s too recent.
I am literally LOL as I type this craziness.

I have IBS and can’t really drink because of it (even before I was pregnant!), since your friend is a nurse, you can probably just tell her that you’ve been having a lot of GI issues and your doc recommended cutting it out for a bit to see if it helps. No one wants to talk about poop for too long, so they usually drop it pretty quickly.
If she doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone, and asks what kind of symptoms you’ve been having, etc. you can just joking say something like “I’d really rather talk about anything but my bowels!” and she’ll get the hint.

Why don’t you just say that per your RE and “upcoming surgery” (I assume they don’t know its cancelled if they knew at all) – you are not supposed to indulge in adult beverages or something like that. Another thought is that if you have your own room, bring virgin margs and drinks you can switch out. Just have one poured with the group, excuse yourself and dump/refill with NA. Good luck!

Bacterial infection. You can’t drink on those antibiotics or you will get violently ill. And if she presses too hard, you didn’t bring the bottle and can’t remember the name of the antibiotic. Anyone who’s had these antibiotics will be understanding. Congrats!

I’ve had some great success recently with faking it. I’ve filled a darker-colored beer bottle with water and drank that all night… had some “vodka/sprite” cocktails but asked the bartender to leave out the vodka… I also had a friend who knew make a batch of virgin cocktails and everyone added their own liquor- people liked that one because everyone wanted a different amount of liquor in their drink anyway, and no one noticed that I didn’t add any to mine!
Big congrats to you!!

I used weight loss as as an excuse, but on vacation almost nothing is going to work. They’re going to suspect something. And if you aren’t willing to tell a week from now, you probably shouldn’t use the antibiotics excuse. Think of some reason that you really would decide to give up alcohol for a month that you can stick to.

Have your hubby make your “drinks” all week! Say he lost a bet and he needs to be your “bartender” for the whole vacation! Or try and do vodka/sprite or vodka/cranberry but replace vodka with club soda! Congrats on the BFP!!
