I’m first time pregnant, 11 weeks 5 days. Everything is brand new for me. I started getting morning sickness at around 7wks. With the morning sickness, stress at work and life, I lost some weight 2-3 pounds. I weighed myself this morning and lost another pound. My understanding is that it’s normal to lose weight in 1st trimester and to start gaining weight from 2nd trimester. I’m slowing getting my appetite back. I try to make a more conscious effort to eat better. Hopefully I will gain back the weight and more soon.
So mamas, when did you start gaining weight?

mrsl3un9 : I’ll be 21 weeks on Monday and I’m still within my normal weight range (it always fluctuates by a few pounds). Some days it’s down and others it’s up a pound. Depending on your pre-preggo weight you might not need to gain much. I was at the high end of the ideal weight range for my height pre-pregnancy and my midwife said she won’t be surprised if I only gain 15 pounds by the end given that I have a low appetite and only crave really healthy foods. Up to 25 is the max she would want me to gain. She said the baby will take what it needs even if it sucks it from your fat stores. My legs and arms have clearly gotten slimmer (even coworkers have commented) but the bump keeps getting bigger!
If you’re worried check with your medical provider but don’t freak out by comparing yourself to other mamas – lots of women gain too much weight in pregnancy which isn’t healthy.

I lost weight during the first trimester, not because of morning sickness but because I had food aversions to pretty much everything! Once I got into the second trimester (around 14-16 weeks) I slowly started to gain. Christmas/Holiday food helped with that haha. I’m now 30 weeks and have gained about 12 lbs. I’m petite and was at a healthy weight pre-pregnancy and my midwife suggested I gain 25-35ish lbs. I’m gaining about a pound per week at this point now so I’m hoping to be right around 25ish lbs gained when I get to 40 weeks!

mrsl3un9 : It was from around week 18 for me. As you say the first trimester I didn’t put any weight on because of the nausea. Around week 24 or 26 I needed maternity clothes and most of my weight gain has been after then.

i had gained 4lbs by the end of my 1st trimester. i had no morning sickness, no food aversions, etc. if it matters, i’ve always been underweight (i was 85-90lbs when i got pregnant) and i was really worried that i would have trouble gaining, but it hasn’t really been an issue. my doctor has said she wants me to gain a total 30-35 pounds. i’m now 30 weeks and have gained about 25.

I’ll be 18 weeks tomorrow. I previously weighed myself after my egg retrieval (IVF) but not again until this week.
I had a body fat analysis scale so I bought a regular digital scale that might be a bit safer. I wanted to see where I was weightwise before my first OB appt.
According to the scale, I haven’t changed much at all, less than 5lbs up. I was 200 lbs. in August after egg retrieval. As a bigger girl I’m trying to be more careful to not gain too much for fear of gestational diabetes.
I will get a more accurate idea once weighed by my OB.
Haven’t had much nausea but also not super hungry. I haven’t been buying junk because my husband can eat lots of it and lose, but I get into bad habits and pick at stuff if it’s in the house.
I also find that milk with dinner has been satisfying with a piece of fruit for dessert.

Probably about 24 weeks for me. Gaining weight was surprisingly hard for me. I’m due next week and I’ve only gained 16 pounds, but my doctors recommended 25-35 (my BMI was about 19 when I got pregnant). I ended up having to stop exercising at 32 weeks and literally stuffing my face (donuts, pizza, etc) to even gain what I did. I don’t think my experience is common, but everyone is very different!

I lost about 15 lbs in my frist trimester (basically IVF weight thanks to back to back retrievals and loads of meds during both transfers) due to both food aversions and morning sickness. I tried to snack and keep my stomach from going empty but really struggled and there were few nights I wanted to even eat dinner. I’m 15+3 and despite my appetite slowly coming back, I am staying steady at that loss. I swear, I’m eating foods I normally wouldn’t and even milkshakes too – ha! My boobs and bump continue to grow and my husband is joking that the baby is stealing fat from my butt (its shrinking!).
I asked my OB last week and she said they usually recommend up to 10 pounds before 20 weeks (generally 5lbs in the first trimester and 5 in those next few weeks). After 20 weeks she recommends a pound a week to get to that 25-35lb weight gain. I’m going to speak with her again about it during my 16 week appointment next week, though just to be safe.

LilliV : So funny, I just read your comment. My body is doing the same, my butt and thighs are smaller but belly is finally getting bigger!

I’m 12 w exactly. I didn’t get morning sickness and I bet I still lost about 5 pounds right away from nausea/ food aversions. I was glad because I probably gained 10 pounds in the 2 months before getting pregnant (stupid I know!). I bet you in the last week or so I’ve gained 2 of those pounds back, as my belly is starting to pop out a bit. Weight gain is supposed to be very small first trimester if any. You’ll start gaining weight any time now- probably in the upcoming few weeks

I’m 18 weeks. I’ve gained 6 pounds. I think it mostly happened after week 14. I didn’t have morning sickness and I ate my way through the holidays, so I’m surprised I haven’t gained more weight already.

Last pregnancy I gained 5lbs by the time I had my first appt at 8w. I gained 40lbs that pregnancy. I am low/normal BMI to begin with. Didn’t have any morning sickness.

mrsl3un9 : I started gaining weight on the last trimester. I gained very little due to a high aversion to most foods.

I have had zero appetite for most of my pregnancy, so I lost a few pounds in the first trimester and didn’t really start gaining until about 20-21 weeks. My bump and boobs grew, so the weight seems to redistribute from the rest of me, but it was especially noticeable in my face. I am just about at 34w and have gained 10lbs. I started pregnancy overweight though, and my doctor has said she was hoping I would stick to 10-15lbs weight gain total (and I am on target for that). Agree with pp that the baby will take what it needs from your built up fat stores, so unless your primary care provider is worried, I wouldn’t be.

I think I gained 5lbs the second I looked at the positive pregnancy test 😂 I was underweight to begin with so I gained prettt easily. By 27 weeks I was up 20lbs and by the time I went into labor at 38 weeks I was up about 35lbs.
