I got pregnant with baby#2 while nursing #1. I nursed on demand except for 5 hours a day when I was at work. I kept nursing her untill she was 21 months old and 2 months later I gave birth to baby #2. She’s 8 months old and I’m nursing on demand again except when I’m at work and a big chunk of that time she’s still asleep. We’ll be trying for baby#3 soon, without weaning, but it hurt like hell to nurse when pregnant in my case.

tm6173 :  I read a lot about so-called “extended” nursing and the studies I found showed that children who are allowed to self wean actually end up being more independent and confident than those who are weaned before they are ready. They really won’t breastfeed until college despite what those old bitties at the grocery store say! I kind of did a combo because I really like nursing and wanted her to wean herself…but I was also really sick and tired of her ripping my shirt off in public. At her first birthday I weaned her down to just morning/bedtime and she can use a bottle or sippy cup during the day. My plan is to let her continue with those two until she’s done but we’ll see how that works out with trying for #2. If I need fertility treatment again I might have to give her the boot lol. It all comes down to doing what works best for you and your family.

Hahaha, no problem, I’ll answer your questions. I got on the mini pill immediately after giving birth and got off at 7 months post partum. I got my period back like 6 weeks after that. I have endometriosis and PCOS so my periods are really irregular and long, so I never know when I ovulate so we were trying by just doing it whenever we felt like it. I haven’t had a period since April and got pregnant the beginning of July. We did and still do cosleep. My husband works nights so it’s easier for me to have my babies by my side.

I exclusively breast-fed (and pumped while at work) my 2 daughters, and was able to conceive the second while still nursing the first.  With baby #1, I got my period back at 7 months post partum.  This coincided with baby getting a little more into eating solids, and sleeping through the night.  I started temping and doing opks because we hoped to conceive again quickly.  The first couple months of having my period back, I didn’t actually ovulate.  Once I was ovulating again, we conceived on the second month trying when baby was 11 months and was still ebf.  I had hoped to nurse my first past one year but my supply really tanked after getting pregnant, and she self-weaned at 13 months, I’m assuming because there was almost no milk left at this point.  🙁  I know this doesn’t happen to everyone though!  My second is not a good sleeper so I was hoping that her round-the-clock nursing would hold off my period a little longer because we’re not ttc right away this time, but nope.  7 months on the dot again.  So not nursing overnight vs nursing every couple hours overnight didn’t seem to make any difference on when my period came back.

This is such an interesting board. I don’t have babies yet so I can’t really comment on breastfeeding but I wish you the best and am thankful you shared this for future reference(:
