@debwrb:  Generally, the first prenatal they will make you do a pee-test to confirm pregnancy. Then they will give you a bunch of pamphlets and talk to you about healthy eating, things you can and cannot do while pregnant, etc. Then they will do a basic exam, a pap if you haven’t had one in the last 6 months and they will take a bunch of blood to run all your preliminary labs. For mine, they also scheduled my dating scan/ultrasound.

Who told you NPs can’t perform exams? They totally can. I had my first 4 prenatal appts with an NP.

They might also ask you for yours and the father’s family medical history, so be prepared for that.  If the father can attend, its helpful.

It may be a good time to ask questions of your parents as well, prior to going in. It’s good to know if there are any genetic issues that they should test for, for instance we found out that I am a cystic fibrosis carrier, so they had hubby tested to see if we were at risk.

Our first appointment was with an NP. She asked a ton of questions about our medical history, went over the big dos and don’ts, gave us a huge packet of information about the hospital and pregnancy/childbirth/breastfeeding/etc classes, as well as a book, dated our pregnancy and gave me a flu shot (mine was in December).

I didn’t do a urine test, but she did send me to the lab for a blood draw, and because of a prior miscarriage not terribly long before, she managed to get us in to get an ultrasound (the official reason was so that the pregnancy could be properly dated, but she seemed to understand without us asking how anxious we were to make sure everything was okay this time). I LOVE our NP.

ETA: I didn’t have a pap done, they had scheduled me for a follow-up two weeks later with a midwife who did that.

My first appointment was with a NP as well. We filled out medical history paperwork, they did a urine test and a pap. I also got an ultrasound with the vag-cam.

Then I got a crap ton of blood drawn.

My doctor has all newly pregnant couples take a class just about general pregancy stuff, what to eat, what not to eat, how to stay healthy and what to expect as you go through your pregnancy. Your NP will probably give you that kind of information there.
