Hi ladies! I’m going to be going off of birth control soon and my dr. said it’s important to start taking prenatal vitamins a couple months before ttc. Problem is, I’m allergic to fish oil and I’m having a really hard time finding a prenatal vitamin with dha that doesn’t have fish oil. The nurse at the office suggested Nexa prenatal. It just seems a bit expensive to pay $60/month for these though! Any suggestions or thoughts? I appreciate the help! Thanks 🙂

You could always get a prenatal without dha and take a vegan/veg dha supplement?

The most important, argueably *only*, thing that is necessary in a prenatal vitamin is folic acid. It reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the first trimester. It comes in prenatal vitamins or alone.
Also, there are lots of prenatal vitamins on the market that don’t have DHA.

if you want a prenatal with DHA, try brainstrong – they have vegetarian DHA, which has no fish oil
i’ve been taking them for a few months, and really like them

I got a vegetarian prenatal at Whole Foods that has veg-based DHA.

thanks everyone for the responses!!
Mrs. Kiwi , i thought about that as an alternative if i dont find one combined. of course i’d love to have everything in one pill, but if not, a vegan dha supplement is a very practical idea.
redqueen, i’ll have to look into brainstrong, that’d be great. thanks so much. did you buy them online or at a drugstore?
ahavah, i was at my whole foods today and didn’t see any veg based prenatal w/dha (in one pill). i did see dha that was veg. based, but it didn’t contain anything else in addition to that. 🙁 maybe it’s just my location.

Honestly as long as you take a multi vitamin and folic acid, I think you will be okay!

@krystallite: Try Belly Bar they have a lot of prenatal products anthereof vitamins are chewable. You get 60 tablets for about $10. You can find this brand at Walgreens, target and walmart

You can get your DHA from a seperate pill, it doesn’t have to be an all-in-one. That’s what I do. (I use a fish-oil based DHA though, so I don’t have a DHA pill to recommend.)
For my prenatal vitamin, I take New Chapter Perfect Prenatal. I love it! It’s an organic food-based vitamin. Very easy on the stomach and easy to digest. No artificial dyes or preservatives.

2nd for New Chapter… I’ve taken both the Women’s Daily and the Prenatal. Another wonderful organic, food-based vitamin is Garden of Life Vitamin Code RAW Prenatal (DHA free). I was told the raw food form is more easily absorbed so the body actually utilizes more the ingredients.

I take the Rainbow Light prenatal vitamin and it is awesome. Never makes me sick, it’s all natural. No DHA in it so I take the Target Up & Up brand of DHA prenatal. No fish oil in it.
Like PP said, make sure you are getting plenty of folic acid prior to concieving. Good luck!
