Hi guys, I’m not pregnant yet but I’m trying to decide on a health insurance package and I have an option to select prescription coverage for an additional $500. That allows me to get generic prescriptions for a low copay ($0-10).
Is it worth it to pay $500 a year for prescription coverage? Would I spend less if I just paid for generic drugs out of pocket while I’m pregnant??
Thanks for your thoughts!!

I think $500 is a lot for your pregnancy. I have only gotten 3 prescriptions during my pregnancy. Vitamins and antacids, which are both available over the counter if its cheaper. The only expensive thing I have had has been prescription hemorrhoid creams…And hopefully you won’t need it! But that is the one thing that I’ve had the prescription definitely surpasses the over the counter options.
I will say that paying for a prescription plan once you have kids maybe be a consideration tho. Hubby has blue cross blue shield and we prolly pay $40-60 every time my step son gets sick.

Two of my friends that just had babies both had to take an anti-nausea med throughout the whole pregnancy. It was a lot of pills and since you can only take prescriptions that are safe for pregnant women it limits your selection sometimes.
I would tend to say yes the $500 is probably worth it because you may need meds after giving birth too. You figure each prescription at around $50 each (full price for generic, much high for the brand name) if you get 10 prescriptions/refills then its worth it.

i think it depends on your health… which you can’t always predict until your pregnant. for me, i get really bad migraines so i’m still taking lots of meds, and many women start getting migraines during pregnancy so you just don’t know what you’ll need.

Thanks for your replies!! Your info is really helpful. You’re right about prescriptions adding up. I’ve been lucky enough to not need many prescriptions for most of my life but I’m sure pregnancy and children can bring on the unexpected. I’m still not sure if it’s worth it to pay the $500 up front or just go out of pocket. I guess i was wondering if anybody ended up paying way over $500 because then I’d feel more confident about paying for the insurance.

i would do it. you never know what’s going to happen, and you could end up having to pay a lot more.
