Is there a compromise?

Are you getting married locally? Can your mom host a cake and tea after the ceremony for the family?

@megan1016: We just had our private destination ceremony in Hawaii, but it was very private, just the two of us actually. Family and friends wanted to attend and we had considered it, but then decided against it because we just really wanted to be the two of us. So we stuck with our decision and very glad we did. I just did not want to be stressed about everyone else’s needs on the day of. But we did promise that we will put together a wedding back at home in the springtime. That seemed to work since everyone’s looking forward to it. I say stick to your decision, but maybe do a nice family celebration at home too?

@megan1016: well those sound like sound enough arguments. Just repeat them to her and if she still insists tell her thanks for the thoughts, but you just can not do it that way.

But I know what you mean about a nagging mom…My husband’s grandparents live with us and right before we were about to leave to Hawaii to get married, his grandmother put a guilt trip on us about not inviting them and the parents, that supposedly the parents will have hurt feelings. But we just ignored her complaints (aren’t we awful!) and told her it will work out, it will be okay. She hasn’t brought it up since, and on the night we returned-married!!!- everyone got together at our house for dinner.  Enjoy your wedding and don’t feel bad! I also really like your idea about the vow renewal with everybody next year. I think that’s a terrific idea!
