I completely understand! Go with the gel polish. I took off my acrylic nails (I had been wearing them nonstop for 10 years), then I switched to gel polish for about 8 months and my nails are finally healthy and halfway strong enough to wear with polish alone. Hope this helps!

Shellac is amazinggg, especially if you want your nails to start getting healthier. In fact, I would recommend shellac instead of gel!

My mom just took off her nails (I think hers was gel with french manicure?) and is right now, letting them breathe for 4 weeks before going for another manicure. She’s thinking of acrylic this time.

I love shellac! I’m not completely sure of the difference between gel and shellac, but I like the shellac brand the best.  I’ve got OPI gel on my nails now and I don’t like it at all.

While I think gel/shellac is amaaazing, I like to be able to switch my polish often. I have over 100 bottles, sooo yeah. I have choices. It’s like I go shopping in my office/nail room for my next manicure when I’m ready to switch.

shellac is a particular brand of gel polish. Other ones I’ve worn include OPI, Gelish and Ink.

@Miss Otter:  Shellac and gel are the same thing, except that Shellac is a technology by CND and is a type of gel polish.

Gel. I wish women would stop getting acrylics. They’re just…not attractive and unsanitary. Then again, I don’t like long natural nails, either (same reasons). I love gel polish, especially because I can’t wear regular polish (it either smudges or, if I can get it to dry without messing it up, chips within hours). I got a gel manicure at my salon and loved it, and ended up buying a kit to do it at home (Red Carpet Manicure). It’s all I wear now.

If acrylics are maintained properly, they cause minimal damage to your natural nail. Yes, if you pull them off they’re going to rip and tear what’s underneath, but with most acrylic, if you soak it in straight acetone it turns jelly like and you can scrape it off. Your natural nails will be soft, but you won’t have layers peeled off them.

I love gel polishes, but in saying that I had super thin, brittle nails long before I ever had acrylics, and they still chipped after a couple of days.

OP, I’d also invest in some cuticle oil, that will help put moisture in and can help strengthen. Silica is also great for hair and nails.

I’ve left my fingernails natural for many years now. What’s the difference between gel and regular polish?

@LiliKitty:  I’m another nail polish collector; with gel I wouldn’t be able to switch my polish as often as I’d like which is practically by mood some weeks.  I never cared for the look of acrylics but I’ve always had strong nails that grow fast and long.

Gel made my nails much weaker, so I prefer regular even though gel looks gorgeous.

@doberman:  Exactly. I need to change as I wish. I add gems, stamps, hand drawn designs with either paint brushes or striping polish… I can’t imagine paying for that at a salon. I suppose I could go out and start my collection all over again with a UV lamp and gel polish but ugh.
