Yeah, I sometimes wonder too – especially when it’s someone from the wedding industry (dress shops, venues, photographers, etc.). They always ask to see the ring, and they always gush over it.

If it’s friends and family, I do wonder a bit, because my ring looks a bit ‘different’ – it’s a yellow sapphire, and even I wasn’t too keen on the design when I first saw it. Having said that, I still love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Does it matter?

I would hope so! If they take the time to comment on it I would imagine that they (less the sales people as half of what they say is an outright lie) really do think it’s stunning!

Not including salespeople, and as long as I didn’t raise the issue and make them feel like they needed to comment, I’d believe them… because if I didn’t think something someone was wearing was to my taste, I wouldn’t compliment it… I’d just not mention it at all.

Never trust sales people. As an ex-sales person, they’ll say anything to butter you up.

@Tina.Baker:  I think most of the time people do. I think the more descriptive the compliment is, the more genuine it is, but I am sure that sometimes they’re just wanting to a) be extra nice to you for whatever reason or b) trying to make small talk. Neither thing is bad in my books.

well so far the only people to see my ring in person are myself and SO, but the photos I’ve taken of it have gone to friends and here on WB and I feel everyone has been genuine in saying my ring is pretty. But honestly it doesn’t matter to me because I love it, they can be as fake as they want lol

I would not care if they meant it or not. I think my ring is beautiful!

It may not be the biggest or brightest… but it is PERFECT for me!

I think they mean it, can you post a picture so we can see?

I’m told quite a bit that I have a beautiful ring– it is a reasonably large solitaire on a diamond pave band. It is classic and grabs the eye of people in a different way than the more blingy engagement rings. A split-shank cushion cut double halo gets a different response than a ring like mine. The adjectives people will use to describe the halo “that’s so sparkly” are different too. Doesn’t mean a thing other than that is what people think of.
