I saw one wedding where the unity candles were lit with barbecue lighters. :-/ A semi-formal church wedding! Everybody was happy looking at the pretty decor and listening to the pretty music, then all of a sudden, CLICK..CLICK…Flame. It really killed it for me! No offense te the ones who did that, or anyone else who did that, but it is not for me.
I want something that will be pretty coming down the aisle. I would love to rent these instead:
I may could rent the candleabras at the same place. But I’m just wondering is there something else out there. Plus, I want our parents to light the unity candles, and then we light ours (the one in the middle) during the ceremony. It would be weird to snatch the lighter thingies from my Candle Lighters, and give them to the parents! And I shouldn’t have to rent 4 lighters.
Is there something else I could do instead? Decorate a lighter maybe? Thoughts?

Buy long matches.
You should be able to buy them very cheaply even at the dollar store or at a camping store. They’ll be marketed as fireplace matches or something like that.

i was trying to remember how we did ours – i know our mothers lit the candles so we didnt have to use a lighter. They each had a taper candle that was lit for them (i’m assuming by a priest or alterboy – we got married in the catholic church) and from their they lit their respective candles and they burned through the ceremony until it was our turn to go light the one in the middle – when we got up there the priest handed us each a taper candle, we each lit our tapered candle using our the candle our mothers lit, then we lit the center one together – maybe the pictures will explain better?
The only suggestion i have is to have those 2 taper candles near the unity candle and maybe have another small votive candle burning so you can use it to light it without the horrible clicking sound?

My Church has candles that are already lit near the alter, so I plan on having my mother and Future Mother-In-Law take long matches light it on the already lit candles in the church and light my candles, then during the ceremony my Fiance and I will take those candles and together light the unity candle.

My venue had a hidden jar candle near the altar-like thing, and our moms lit their taper candles from that. That way there aren’t any matches or barbecue lighters, lol.

Duh, why didn’t I think of that! Have a candle already burning! Wow, I feel a lot less smart now! LOL! 🙂
I knew that we use the tapers to light the big pillar candle, but I just could figure out how to get the tapers lit without it looking kinda, shall we say….redneck? LOL! I just want it to go smoothly!
I do like the long match suggestion though. That’s cool!
