This is my very first post although I will admit I have been secretly living vicariously through many of you for months (blushing). So here is my story. My bf and I have been together for about three years. The majority of our relationship has been long distance (I just recently got a new job much closer to him and now see him 3-4 days out of the week). We started talking about the types of rings I like and even tried some on at the beginning of the year but logistically speaking we weren’t ready to get engaged. However our lives have synced up as of April and I find myself now patiently waiting. I honestly thought we would be engaged by now and cannot wait for the moment that he proposes.
Meanwhile, to occupy myself, I have created drama in my head. When we looked at rings in February, I was adamant about wanting a princess cut and loved the shape when I tried it on. I even tried on a round solitaire just to make sure I didn’t like it better and decided princess was for me. However, I didn’t really even know what a cushion cut was until recently and now I am intrigued! Anyone have opinions on a princess cut vs. cushion cut solitaire? Any thoughts, opinions, details on your own ring are welcomed!

I personally like cushion. I think it has a softer appearance, how it reflects multicolor light and is a bit more antiquated (I like european more but that’s near impossible to find in the budget we had). A benefit FH mentioned is that if a jewler is less than reputable but you still take it in, it’s unlikely they would be able to switch out the stone for one of inferior quality because they are not likely to keep one on hand, if you do not keep it there for more than a day or two (otherwise they could ship one in).
Something to be aware of is that becasue of how it is cut, the surface will look smaller on a cushion because it is cut deeper. So if visible size is more important to you than you might want to go with princess.
I have a cushion cut

I have a cushion and never thoguht I would. I was intent on a radiant. I don’t think it looks particularly large for its weight, or small for that matter. I love it either way. The “chunkier” cushions, the ones that almost look like an old mine cut, I think are the ones that can go either way. A princess cut is still a beautiful stone, just a bit too common for my taste. It has smaller facets too, if thats something that matters to you.
@Knubbsy-Wubbsy: love those sapphires!

@grapefruitlove:I am having a similar experience as far the cushion vs princess delimma. I had talked with the SO and told him I was completely sold on a princess, but after more digging and online searching…I am pretty sure I actually want the cushion. I like that it is still square in shape but it is more rounded and soft to look at. I think I have decided on a cushion but I am kind of in the same boat of not being 100% sure. So..
I told the SO (because he will be picking and suprising me..someday lol) that I think I have decided on a cushion cut but I still love princess cuts and will love whatever he chooses. I am personally so excited to see what he comes up with I have shown him many settings and given him to cut options so it is really exciting to me I wonder what he is going to choose for me all the time, its so exciting.
Anyway I don’t know if I helped much at all but I am in a similar boat but I shared my newfound “cushion love” with my SO and reminded him that my old love princess is not in anyway out of the question, and so now i’m leaving it up to him. I love either one enough to do that, but that may not be your feelings so you may just want to have a talk with mr.grapefruit and share your feelings, see what he likes as well. best of luck and congrats on joining in on the posting fun!!

Welcome to the boards, first of all! Lol I love grapefruits too 😛
I don’t have much technical opinions on the battle between princess and cushion, but I do like cushion cuts a bit more. I think that they are a little less popular than the princess and I like how its a bit softer.

I have a square cushion and love it! I like the softer edges and that to me cushion seems more vintage/antique-y.

Have you checked out an asscher cut ring? That is what I have and I LOVE it! It’s square like a princess cut but the inside is cut like an emerald – gorgeous! But, I am probably just a little biased 🙂

I had the same progression as you. I always thought I wanted a princess but my big issue with it that got me thinking was that I felt like EVERYONE I knew was getting princess cut rings and I just wanted mine to be different. After searching I really fell in love w/ the cushion cut. Like everyonen else said, its softer looking but still not round, super sparkly, and not a lot of people “in real life” know what it is which is kinda cool.
Downsides (imo) are that it does face-up smaller than a similar sized round or princess, and it is becoming a LOT more popular in the last year. When I started looking at rings about 2 years ago I had never heard of anyone with a cushion cut except celebrities and no stores had them on hand… like 0. Over the past year a ton of people (at least on the hive) have gotten them… although I still don’t know anyone in real life who has one.

My center stone is a cushion. I love the cushion look! It’s softer and in a halo is amazing. They make pretty solitares, too.

Depends on setting…
As a solitaire I like princess. As a more ornate design like a halo or pave, I like cushion.

My friend has a princess cut set in a rounded square halo. She originally had a cushion (her dream stone) but changed it out because the princess cut fit better with her setting. It appeared bigger than the cushion despite being the same size.

I LOOOVE cushion cuts but we ended up with a radiant because of cost. The cusions seemed to cost more for a smaller-looking diamond and they didn’t have many size options at the places we looked; they were either smaller than we wanted or super huge, nothing mid-range. I love the asscher, too, and we almost got one but in the end he got me a radiant because it encompassed the best of everything, and I am still in love with it!

I’m a huge fan of cushions! I don’t like the hard edges is the princess and it’s kind of a mixture between princess and round…best of both worlds!

your ring makes me weak in the knees!!

I adore both! My e-ring is a princess in a halo, but I have several other rings with cushion cuts. I will say, I think it has more to do with the setting than you think. My top choice was a cushion as far as stone itself, but in my setting (that I drool over daily) the princess looks and fits better. So, have you thought about setting choices? Just because…here is my princess in a halo. 🙂 Lol.
