Princess and cushion are SO different! I wonder why he’s torn between those two specifically. My finger is far from a 4.5 (7.25)…my e-ring has a cushion cut diamond center that’s 1.11, e-ring shank is 1.8mm and wedding band is roughly 2.3-2.4mm.
ETA-tried to post a pic and the icon isn’t coming up to do so?? Weird!

Here is a handy site for seeing the different cuts and stone sizes/ colours on various finger lengths/ colours/ band widths etc. A cushion is a tiny little bit bigger facing up than a princess of the same carat.

I’ve a princess cut size 5 since I couldn’t get smaller because the way the diamonds are arranged. I love my ring tho.

Mine is a princess and I love it, but if I had it to do over again, I would get a square cushion.

Princess is a pretty fragile cut. Though my prongs cover the corners, they have chipped more than once already. If you are at all klutzy, or accident prone, be mindful that you’ll need a setting that protects your corners.

A square cushion looks like a princess once it’s set, but is inherently a more durable cut.

I have a square cushion but since it’s the crushed ice kind, I don’t think it looks like a princess cut.  That said, a lot of people have asked if it is a princess just because it’s so square.

I didn’t like the sharp edges of the princess cut so that’s why I wanted a cushion.  I don’t think princesses are dated but I see a lot more on women my sister’s age (mid 30s) than women my age (age 30).

He should get a modified cushion cut since he be torn, I think they are a nice combination of both cuts. But it should be up to you since you are wearing the ring!

Modified Cushion — nice in between type of cut

Another common Cushion cut

August Vintage Cut Cushion— this is a branded cut which is different from those above, very awesome if you like vintage diamonds

Princess cut

These are just examples of the different cuts not really suggestions for you since that is not what you are asking.

lolabee17 :   I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading that cushion cuts faceup smaller because they are so deep

Love my cushion. Princess is too sharp for my taste.

My 1.3 princess (not anywhere near your ring size) When we were ring shopping I considered almost every stone shape but none of them spoke to me like a princess.  The symmetry just speaks to me.  It probably isn’t even the most flattering shape for my short, chubby fingers but I don’t care.  I love it and can’t imagine another shape for my ring.

Cushion lover here. I like chunky cushions not the crushed iced kinds. Mines an antique ring. Finger size 4.75

I mean if you insist 😜 best of luck being patient while waiting! I wasn’t haha. Mine’s cushion but my brother did call it ‘square’ once 😔
