Sounds like a great decision for you two!  We’re doing the same but only in the mountains.

I like to scope out StyleMePretty.com (and SMP Destiantions), RuffledBlog.com and GreenWeddingShoes.com and search for Mexico or Carribbean to see what photos swoon you, then learn where that area is by looking in the credits.

I’m sure some savvy Destination Wedding bride has her own real tips though!

Do you mean private as in just you and your fiance? or private as in away from the general public? If its the latter, a lot of the resorts are not very private at all, particularly for beach ceremonies

And do you want a legal wedding (in mexico you need to be there a few days before to have blood and medical tests) or a religious or symbolic wedding -legal and religious weddings are entirely seperate in mexico, you can be married in the church ‘in the eyes of god’ but legally single.

And do you have a rough budget? (i have a few ideas for places but it depends whether youre looking for a private venue or not_

@futureMrs.A:  we did a destination elopement! Best decision I ever made!

I don’t have much advice about where in Mexico but looking at other DWs on wedding sites is a great start! Also, @jessitaylor:  is right about the legal issues. To be married in another country and have it legal in the US you have to follow that country’s laws. We had to have a civil ceremony when we got back.

Many resorts offer wedding packages. If it’s just the two of you, find a few resort choices and ask how they would help put a private wedding together. We’re getting married in the Bahamas and there will only be 8 people including us. I did everything online – found a wedding officiant, rented a private home, arranged for a post-ceremony sunset champagne sailing cruise, found a spa/salon tog et my hair & my daughter’s done, found a photographer etc. If you want something very small, St Thomas has many options for getting married on a boat by the captain and some beautiful resorts for the honeymoon part. PM me if I canmaybe answer any questions. I’ve been putting our wedding together for months.

Oh and we stayed at The Reef Resort for 8 days.  All rooms are beach front right on the water!  We booked with VRBO.com
