In our school the senior girls wore garters to match their dresses (if they wanted to) we took approximately one picture of our thighs with the garters showing. I don’t think my parents noticed I had one on and they didn’t take the picture. I think the fact that a lot of kids get absolutely hammered on prom night (many at houses with parents at home) contributes a lot more to promiscuity than any band of fabric ever could.

I’m not going to lie; I wore one for my senior prom.

But then again, I was a big whorebag.

Yeah, can’t say I ever heard of this before.  At least no one told me when I went to prom in 2006.  I think it’s a lame idea though.  Kind of takes away from your wedding to me.

Ummm, No.  I have never heard of this, but if had had daughters this is not something I would allow.  I will be checking for this during prom season now with the step sons prom.

I went to prom in 2003 and this definitely wasn’t done back then, atleast where I come from. I think it’s a bit ridiculous to be honest. I didn’t even wear a garter for my wedding.

Huh. In 2007 and 2008 when I went to prom EVERYONE had a garter. And the years before me did, too. It is just a tradition here, I guess. I never even considered it to be like a sexy thing…

I’d never heard of wearing garters to prom until I came to this forum. My last prom was 2005, FI’s was 2006, and we didn’t wear them. Granted, most of us wore ballgowns, unlike now when most of what I see girls in is something slinky, backless, and with a thigh-high split.

I was appauled to recently learn of this. Ok, back in 1996 when I graduated this was unheard of. Half the stuff these young girls walk around in is a disgrace. I am not an old fashioned close minded person by any stretch of the imagination, but young girls are WAY too sexual these days.

Don’t get me wrong. I can acknowledge that a girl is capable of wearing a garter in female-friendship fun solidarity and not have it followed up by sex. I get it. But it was unheard of in my school, and just knowing how I was flooded with hormones, horny all the time (think teenage boy on viagra), I know the only reason I would ever wear a garter is because I wanted a guy to take it off me. I would never allow my daughter to wear a garter to a school event. She can save that crap for college. I don’t need my sex crazed future daughter prancing around in a garter in front of sex crazed, immature little boys, filling their brains with thoughts of her lady business. No thanks. 🙂

Oh for heaven’s sake. There are so many other things in the world and you’re worrying about GARTERS causing promiscuity.

Worry about poor sex education, sure; worry about slutty dresses, maybe; but honestly kids are going to do things whether the girls are wearing garters or not.

I just talked to my step son about this (his girlfriend was here).  He said “I wouldn’t want my girlfriend to wear one of those and wouldn’t put that in my room, you would kill me.” Girlfriend says “alot of girls wear those to prom”  Stepson says “Not one of my girlfriends, I don’t date sluts.” Bahahaha – The poor girl just look deflated.  My stepson is just so funny sometimes.

@SpecialSundae: I’m not so much worried that garters will single-handedly cause promiscuity. But there are a million and 1 things out there already. I wouldn’t want 1 more. If I found out after the fact, whatever. If I know beforehand, that ain’t happening. Sure, they can still get laid without the garter, but I’d rather they not start the night subtly asking for it with their wardrobe. 🙂

@tksjewelry: That’s absolutely hilarious. Sounds like something my SO would say. Your stepson is quick. 🙂

@claireos: I have to admit that kid just cracks me up and keeps me on my toes.  He is a great kid and a pleasure be around.
