Fiance got me a “promise necklace” mainly because i was in culinary school at the time so no rings were allowed so he got me a STUNNING necklace that i am actually wearing right now and i wear it for almost ever “important” thing

I had a promise ring from a previous relationship. Things ended up not working out when his visa expired and he didn’t renew it in time and had to go back to his country. And then could never come back… Oh well. I think I won out in the end!

I am not a fan of promise rings and Fiance never bought any kind of ring, promise or other wise, while we were dating because he thought it would be too much of a tease to give me a ring box and not have an engagement ring in it.

@Diamond88:  It’s not about the gift at all. If it were, you could say the same thing about an engagement ring. It’s a symbol, the same way an engagement ring is.

@Future Mrs K:  No, for us, the engagement ring meant we could start planning the wedding. Not “I’ll marry you one day.” But that’s not what our promise rings meant either.

@sweetpea87:  then what does the promise ring mean?  I thought it meant I primise to marry you? which is also what an engagement ring stands for.

or is it like I promise to one day to get you an engagment ring?? They are silly and I think a gimic of the jewelry world, one more thing to market and sell just like how they market the right hand ring now!!  If my husband had given me one I would have laughed and said lets just wait for the real thing and see what happens…..

@sweetpea87:  Same thing for me! A promise ring is completely different from an engagement ring in my eyes.

Promise ring = I will marry you one day

Engagement ring= we need to start wedding planning now

And yes I got one from my SO 😀 No, we are NOT in high school or collegeTongue Out

@Diamond88:  i got 3 promise rings from 3 different relationships they all failed!

i told my now Fiance if he ever got me a “promise ring” that id leave him lol

5months later i got the Ering ; ) i just feel after a certain age a promise ring is a shut up ring and a way for jewelers to make money. but that’s just m opinion. please dont take it as me being mean i just have a deep hate for promise rings. it was a promise to shut me up for a while.

I disagree with everyone who is being so critical of promise rings. What if you start dating very very young, and it would be years before an engagement would be age-appropriate? I have a friend who is 22, has been with her SO since they were 13 and 14, and she has had a promise ring for a few years, probably very soon to be replaced with an e-ring. Frankly this situation makes more sense to me than if they had gotten engaged at 18. In my area and amongst most people I know, they would have been laughed at and not taken seriously had they gotten engaged at 18, before even starting university and grad school! (No offense meant to anyone who is very young and engaged/married, I’m just speaking about perceptions within the circles I move in, and my university town.)

I’ve got a promise ring, it was given to me in my early 30’s by my fiance.  We met online as friends, later fell for each other.  The reason he gave me the promise ring is because we were in a long distance relationship (him Vancouver, me Ohio) and although we knew pretty much from the moment we realized we loved each other that we would get married, we agreed to hold off on getting formally engaged until we were ready to commit to immigrating and all it entails.

I wear my promise ring on my right hand.  Here’s a picture.  It’s a small aquamarine.  It wasn’t expensive, but it was nice to know when we were more than a thousand miles apart that we were headed for something permanent.

I have a 3 stone aquamarine with side diamonds (never really called it a promise ring, but it is what it is).  SO gave it to me when we had been dating just under 6 months (Christmas 2009).  We are coming up on 3 years in two weeks, and it’s still on my ring finger.  I love it.  We started dating when he was 18 and I was 20 (I’m now 23, he’s 21), and we still want to wait another year til we get engaged.  To me, it symbolizes our commitment to each other, not so much a “promise,” but I will use the term loosely.

My DH got me a promise ring for Christmas about a year after we started dating. We were 18 at the time. He really cared for me and wanted to get me something to show me he was really serious about our relationship.

It’s a pretty white gold ring with a .25ct diamond. I still wear it (and always have wore it) on my right hand, ring finger. My engagement ring wasn’t a replacement for it. I’m just as attached to it as I am my engagement ring and wedding band. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, so the three rings I have mean a lot to me!
