He needs to gracefully accept the promotion and not say a word until he is 100% sure moving and no more than a month before his intended last day.

@RunnerBride13:  Agreed!!

Emphasize that most employers will not think twice before laying off or firing employees to save money. He must protect himself and his family’s interests first and above all else. There should be no misplaced sense of loyalty here.

Besides, a lot can happen in 8-10 months! Moving might get delayed a bit, the company might expand out that way, etc.

@sillysillybee:  “He should accept the promotion and keep his mouth shut about your plans to leave. It will look great on his resume and he should not waste a single second feeling guilty. People move on all the time in their professional lives. He will get great experience and a nice boost to his resume”

Agreed 100%.  And don’t tell the company he is planning to move either.  Plans change, you might not move, or the company might expand to that area.  Go with what is best for you now.

Plus, if you do move, this promotion will likely help him get a better job offer in your new area.

@Cappugcino:  I feel it could jeopardize his friendship. I’d be pissed if I recommended my friend (it really is going out on a limb for someone) and then he left the job in under a year. It won’t look great on a resume if it’s only a few months and if he doesn’t have anyone to use as a reference for the role (they will obviously be upset if he doesn’t disclose his plans).

I can absolutely see both sides – you have to do what’s best for you, but at the same time it sounds like a bit of short term gain and long term pain.
