Background: When we started dating, I was of the opinion (having been married and divorced twice before) that I’d never get married again. In fact, before we’d been together a full year I even forbade the 2ndtimegroom (2tG) from ever buying me a ring.
But things change, and earlier this year I started rethinking my position, and warned Mr 2tG that I might be chaning my mind. He was thrilled (his exact response: Yay!), and when I told him I had, indeed, changed my mind and that yes, he even had permission to buy me a ring afterall. That was this past June.
So for 3 months we’ve been talking about getting married, pre-planning, but telling no one and he’d been looking for the ring. We even attended a Bridal Fair and I won a piece of jewelry from a local jeweler and, when we went to go pick it up the next week, Mr 2tG was going to talk to them about designing a ring.
He didn’t like what he’d seen in their display cases so I picked out my prize and we left. Originally I’d wanted the ring and proposal to be a surprise but he wasn’t sure if the ring he picked out was “enough,” so we decided to head to the mall and take a look at his top choice. I liked it, he bought it and we sent it off to be sized.
This past week has been the longest. week. ever.
So I’d seen the ring, I knew the proposal was coming, and it really didn’t seem like The Moment was going to be all that much, ya’ know? Maybe I’d even feel kind of silly about the whole thing.
He picked up the ring Friday on the way home from work (I had been working from home that day, and my drawing desk is next to a window that faces the driveway so was nervously watching for his car). He walked in, fumbled for the light switch in the living room, both of us grinning like idiots, showed me the bag, the box, the box inside the box and, finally, the ring.
It was prettier than I remembered.
He gave me a hug and said simply “I love you, and I want to marry you very much.” Since it wasn’t an actual question, all I could think to say at the moment was “Yay!”
It’s sort of a non-proposal, sure, but it was silly and goofy and perfectly suited for us. And he said he’d been thinking of what he could say all the way home but it all just went out the window at the moment. I think it was darling.
We called our families, then made it Facebook official and spent the rest of our evening popping into our emails to see the comments and congratulations–engagement in a social media world, right?
And, of course, the ring 🙂 Blue sapphire with a halo of white sapphires and more on the band. Will have to do some “glamour shots” with it someday soon, but for now this one works.
