nataliesawitch :  My moissanite wedding set was under $600 from Starsgem, so you should have no problem staying under that with your upgrade, even after he bought that. Definitely talk to him about the durability issues and upgrading.

nataliesawitch :  Another option is lab diamonds. You could probably set a 1/2 carat lab-created diamond into a simple solitaire setting for around 700 dollars, and it wouldn’t have the optical or staining issues of moissanite.

nataliesawitch :  you said he has no problem buying things for himself and the budget for your ring is under $1,600. Yet he bought you a CZ in silver as your engagement ring?! Girl,  no! That is crappy behavior on his part.  With that budget you don’t even have to settle for any simulant or silver. You could easily have a 1/2 carat mined diamond solitaire in a solid gold setting or an even larger genuine lab grown from Lightbox etc.

Just tell him directly too. After all he’s obviously not worried about hurting *your* feelings here!

My concern with waiting till after the proposal to say anything is that some guys are unusually attached to the ring that they proposed with. There’s been quite a few cases on here and elsewhere, where the fiancee/wife was unhappy with the ring but the fiance/husband was so attached to the original ring that they refused to even consider the idea of a new, upgraded or different ring, which can rankle for years.

Is he the type who would be open to a new or different ring after the proposal? Or is he a traditionalist when it comes to the proposal/wedding etc? Perhaps just telling him directly may be best. I find that in general for guys, hints (oh, I really love moissanite!) has never, ever worked. I hope you guys manage to figure things out!
