I haven’t used it after a miscarriage, but since I typically have long, anovulatory cycles, my doctor will prescribe either 5 or 10 days worth and then my period starts a few days after I finish the course of the drug. The bleeding is actually progesterone withdrawal bleeding, but it gets you back to CD1 basically “reboots” your hormone levels.

As for side effects, I don’t generally have problems while on Provera, but after I stop it, I get PMS symptoms because my progesterone level is dropping. Sore boobs, moodiness, etc.

I haven’t taken it yet, but will in a week or two to time my period for my IVF cycle.  It’s super common (in the IF world) and I haven’t heard any issues.

I’ve taken it a few times when I stop the pill and need my period to come before I can start Lupron. Always works like a charm and I have never noticed any side effects.

The only negative I have heard about Provera is that long-term use (my doctor said it’s only an issue for people who use it for hormone replacement therapy) is associated with increased insulin resistance. Probably not an issue for most people, but I have PCOS and am going to try to avoid Provera from now on. There are other types of synthetic progesterone (prometrium, for example), that do not have this same association.

I had to take provera while I was on clomid and it worked every time. The only “bad” part was that it gave me the worst period of my life both times. Think of the worst one you’ve ever had and multiply it by 15 and it lasted for 8-9 days when it usually only lasts for 5. BUT it did the job and now I’m pregnant:)
