Hi bees,
So after the invitations headache, done and done……we have gotten back to wedding planning. One thing that we really haven’t even touched is the wedding cake. Before I got engaged I used to joke on how my wedding cake would be the most important/delicious/part of our wedding. We are about 2 months out and I have nothing, no tastings…..nada. So sad. To be fair we were hoping/thought that my half brother’s mother would do our wedding baking since she is a baker by trade. Of course she is not going to our destination wedding, we really didn’t want to deal with the disappointment and so we pretty much have left it till the very end.
We are getting married near Ponce Inlet in Daytona Beach FL. I was thinking about getting a cake from Costco since I had a delicious cake from them but I went back and tried some of their other stuff and not good. So cutting to the chase now, I have come to the conclusion of going to publix for my wedding sweets. I love…..love love….love love cake! Very picky, so I still don’t trust to have one option made by something other than a bakery I really trust, and supermarket sweets are usually not great. Of course Wedding cakes are usually expensive and publix goes great with our budget. I was thinking of ordering a few pies and several of their decadent desserts. Has any one done that? How many did you order? Did people like it? Were they delicious. I figure since I can’t have a delicious beautifull wedding cake… I would compromise and try to cater to my guests instead with having different options based on what I know that they would like. Any advice?

I’ve heard of people doing that. I’ve also heard of just getting a small “fancy” cake for the cutting ceremony and keeping a grocery store cake in the back for eating. So much cheaper than buying a huge, layered cake from a cake bakery. And, if you’re like me and LOVE whipped cream icing, it might be the only way to get what you want on your cake. Definitely an option!

I do not know anyone who had a supermarket cake for their wedding (at least I don’t think I do) but I grew up in Florida and know that Publix cake is the best cake ever. Like it is just typical cake with frosting, but something in it makes it so yummy. I’ve had fancy cakes at weddings and I’d take a big peice of publix cake over typical wedding cake anyday!

Publix makes wedding cakes! I haven’t tried one, but the display cakes at the Publix by me are always pretty. That might be an option to stay within your budget and still get a cake! But if you just do sweets, I looooove Publix’s cheesecakes. All of them. So I recommend that. 🙂 Publix’s red velvet cupcakes are also delicious.

Mmm, that sounds great! My family used to vacation in Florida, and we would always pick up some pie or cake at Publix. It’s delicious! My favorite was their key lime, since we could never really get it up where we live.
If you wanted to mix it up and have some fun with it, you could have a dessert buffet with lots of different option like you mentioned. Check out this adorable one in Brides magazine: http://blog.amyatlas.com/2010/04/brides-magazine-part-ii-vintage-birds_07/

Publix seriously does make the best cake ever! I really wanted Publix cake for our wedding but my Mother-In-Law freaked out when she found out.

I’d go for it! If we had a Publix where I live I’d have done this for sure! Their cake is pretty darn good. We always get them there for any family things when in FL.

Ok, 6 degree’s here but my brothers mother in law is a cake decorater @ publix in FL (not they daytona beach store unfortunatly) but the cakes she makes and decorates are AMAZING! She did my brother and SIL’s when they got married & no one could believe it was “a grocery store” cake!

The cakes are delicious, it’s true. But my friend got a wedding cake from them, and it collapsed before they loaded it for transport the morning of the wedding. They had to scramble and throw something else together, so she didn’t get the cake she ordered. Though I suppose that could happen anywhere…

Publix makes great cakes but they are priced similar if not more than we could get from a reputable local cake business, so we are going with a local baker. I love publix and only shop there for groceries (B1G1 free PLUS two coupons!), but I wanted to support local wedding vendors and their prices are similar. Some stores even deliver.

Publix cake is AMAZING. Whenever SO and I get married, our cake will definitely be from Publix.
To the PP who’s friend had an issue with their cake, the store should of done something to compensate after, although it still sucks to have that happen to your wedding cake. My SO is an asst. store manager for Publix and if someone isn’t happy with their cake, like the way it turned out, something happened to it, etc…they ALWAYS completely reimburse them. My SO’s store even had an incident where they were developing a couple’s engagement pictures, and the film somehow got ruined…so Publix paid the couple’s photographer to redo the entire shoot and then paid for all the pictures afterwards. Publix is a great company, and really great to work for.

I’ve been to one wedding that had a Publix cake and it was great! They’re my go-to for cake needs. They have awesone fruit fillings, instead of using frosting. And their buttercream frosting is flavorful.
