I used to live in PR going to el Morro and old San Juan is nice.  But I woudn’t go to any suburbs as they can be unsafe.  As far as places to stay you could just look at nice resorts in the area.

Travel Nut here.

Mr TTR and I have been to PR a few times now.

Generally speaking, PR is NOT A CHEAP Destination… just as expensive as any MAJOR US City… so something to bear in mind.

We have only been to San Juan (altho we’ve had friends who have gone elsewhere, and loved it as well)

San Juan is like most large North American Cities… so a lot of the same issues.  You need to use your street smarts all the time, especially after dark.

One good thing about SJ, is the Taxis are regulated… flat rate for Destinations within a Zone, or from one Zone to another (ie A to B = X, A to C = Y, etc)

We stayed at the Caribe Hilton (on Condado Lagoon) which is gorgeous.  It is a Hilton Property, so has all the great amenities that comes with that name (and the perks).  We are Hilton Honour Members (Loyalty Program) so we got an INCREDIBLE deal on our accommodations.

I would stay there again in a heartbeat !!

Hope this helps,

PS… Take a look at TripAdvisor… best place on the Internet for Trip Planning Info (Travel Guides – Basic Info – Reviews of Accommodations, Restaurants & Attractions – and their wonderful Forums where you can get one-on-one help for your Questions)

@rlaura76:  I’m planning to head over in Feb for 2 weeks – very excited about it. We’ll be spending majority of our time on OSJ, at Vila Herencia (& old charm b&B). Also going to stay just outside the rainforest for another few nights & flying to Culebra (google Flamenco Beach) for another 3 nights.

We’ve organised this around our Celebrity cruise which will be departing from PR for 7 nights around the Caribbean.

Hope this has helped!
