Puerto Rico for vacation thoughts?

I loved it and would definitely go back (with the caveat that I haven’t been since Hurricane Maria so don’t know how much things may have changed in certain areas). Especially as an escape during the winter!

Like any place, there are areas that are sketchy and dirty — I’d say the same of parts of Paris or London. But I never felt unsafe. Locals were helpful and friendly. We rented a car and drove around the whole island qnd stayed in moderate hotels, so it was not a resort experience, but that’s not what we wanted either. The only danger I’d fear would be hurricanes, but it’s pretty easy to avoid hurricane season (or buy travel insurance in case you need to cancel). Zika is also something to be aware of if you’re TTC or plan to soon, but otherwise not an issue.

Puerto Rico has gorgeous beaches, pristine rainforest, bioluminescent bays, excellent food, charming architecture in old San Juan, and tons of fascinating history. There is tons to do including excursions like zip lining and hiking  through the rainforest, kayaking in bioluminescent water, historic tours of the colonial history, museums, food tours, salsa dancing and night life.

The people who’ve said disparaging things clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. And how rude to criticize your vacation plans. Who does that?!

browneyedgirl24 :  All of this!

It’s crazy to me that people would say that, and frankly I wonder if they’ve ever been themselves or where the hell they got that idea from. Puerto Rico is beautiful, like anywhere in the world it has good parts and bad. I lived there for a few months (pre-Hurricane Maria) and would go back in a heartbeat. I have some friends who visited recently and they absolutely loved it.

Puerto Rico is a great place for a family vacation, probably one of the best. Personally, I enjoyed our trip last year. Based on my personal experience, it’s a good idea to look for rental cars and explore the island by yourself, there are so many amazing places. Good luck!

Puerto Rico is amazing. We went to el Yunque National Forest, and if you have time, take a ferry to Vieques for the most gorgeous beaches!
