Correct, you do not need a passport.  Safe in what regard?  I don’t think you will have any problems if you common traveler sense, stay together, don’t go into bad areas, don’t buy any illegal substances, etc…

Irene hit yesterday, I would double check that eveything is functioning properly at your resort if you are leaving very soon.

You will have an amazing time, PR is full of wonderful culture and history 🙂

You do not need a passport.

I was just in San Juan this April.  I didn’t feel unsafe at all.  Some areas can seem a little seedy, but that’s like any other big city.  The only thing I would suggest, and a local agreed with us while there, is to not be out at 2 or 3 in the morning.  That’s when the rif raf comes out.

My fiance proposed to me in old San Juan. It’s beautiful and I never felt unsafe. We stayed in Condado and took taxis into old San Juan almost daily.
