Pickpocketing is very common in tourist destinations, unfortunately. Even the most informed person can be a target. When I went to Paris, I kept all my valuables in inside pockets of bags and locked the outer pockets with locking zippers. You can also buy seperate locking clips to add to your travel bags for added security. I also always held my belongings/backpack in front of me on public transport or in crowded areas. So it’s never happened to me thankfully… I did have a friend recently visit Rome and had her phone stolen on the bus on the second day of her 2 week long trip. It can happen to anyone!

Nope, I’ve traveled in PR and was not pickpocketed and always felt very safe. I’d be more wary of pickpocketing in big European cities like Paris & Barcelona where you’re often pressed up against people in the subway/streets.

When traveling in areas that are more prone to this kind of petty theft, I typically wear a crossbody bag with a zip or snap closure and keep it on the front of my body. I think generally being aware of your surroundings and keeping your eyes on your belongings is the best way to avoid pickpocketing.
