Where in the Bahamas? lol, there are sooo many places! i’ve heard wonderful things about Sandals. It was out of our price range for June 09 but i’m thinking anniversary! My friend’s SIL is a travel agent and says Sandals is top notch and she *loves* Secrets resorts and Riu is always a class act too except everyone hates how you must make reservations for dinner at breakfast at Riu resorts.

She also said everyone complains about the lack of quality of food in the dominican. Us included–every couple we met got food poisoning.

I went to Punta Cana and did not get food poisoning.  Don’t drink the water (even to brush your teeth), and be careful when water is in your face.  Also follow the peel, boil, or cook method.  EVERYTHING you eat must be peelable, boiled, cooked (or out of a package).  No exceptions.  No eating fresh salads.  You’re much less likely to get sick that way.

That said, if you can afford it I’d recommend the Bahamas or Antigua over the DR.  I wasn’t impressed with the DR, and the beaches the resort I stayed at in Punta Cana were lacking.

I went to Punta Cana in March a few years ago and wasn’t wow-ed by the place, but I am sort of a beach snob. I’ve never been to the Bahamas or Antigua but I agree with the previous post that I would choose the Bahamas or Antigua over Punta Cana.

Out of all your choices…ANTIGUA would be the place to go!  I’ve been to Bahamas (it’s nice), and friends have been to Punta Cana (said it was nice, but not outside the resorts), a friend went to Antigua and loved it!  I just think that ANTIGUA is more romantic for a honeymoon!

Don’t go to Punta Cana.  The resorts are all gated in because there is nothing pleasant outside of them.  You have to sleep, eat, and entertain yourself at the resort.  It just seems silly to me to go to an exotic tropical location when you won’t see anything other than a really commerical hotel.

My sis and bil went for one of their anniversary trips to Antigua and loved it!  They got a rondoval and stayed at Sandals.  I also have another good friend who went on a recent anniversary trip to the D.R. and she HATED IT.  Totally hated everything about the trip from the time the plane touched the ground.  They just did a re-do anniversary btw.

Forgot to add I’ve been to the bahamas quite a few times and always stayed at Atlantis.  Love it!!!   Also have been to the One and Only Ocean Club nearby which is a tad more private and elegant and also has privileges to visit Atlantis btw.

I heart the bahamas!

Yeah definitely do. Sucks to not eat fruits and salads on vacation! Which is pretty much what we lived off of b/c the meat was iffy looking.

LOL.  My Fiance and I basically subsisted solely on questionably rare  meat (and avoided veggies) in Punta Cana, and never got food poisoning because we didn’t eat vegetables washed in tap.  How backwards.

I’ve always wanted to go to Atlantis in the Bahamas.  I hear there is plenty to do there.

WTF?  I have been to Punta Cana twice and ate whatever I wanted and *never* got a hint of sickness.  I loved the beach and do not need to be entertained by excursions.  When I travel it’s a beach chair, book, and cocktail.  My last trip to DR we stayed at the Iberostar Bavaro which were all suites.

It is true that the DR is still developing it’s tourism.  Most of the resorts were built within the last 10-15 years max.  But even in Cabo, our resort was gated and I found it to be a bit boring.

That said….We are going to Puerto Vallarta for our honeymoon.  I have heard great things about the Bahamas and was recommended not to go to Antigua by a well traveled friend.  Though….I am still going to visit Antigua in the future. Check out tripadvisor.com  I LOVE this site for real reviews about hotels and various locations.  There are lots of pictures so you can really see what each place is all about.
