Hmmm, Well I’ve been to Punta Cana and LOVED it. But considering the tragedy in Haiti, you might want to steer clear of that area. Although, then again, they have not mentioned any part of the DR being affected by the earthquake.

But I can tell you that the DR has some of the most gorgeous beaches I have ever seen,.

* A little extra info: Playa del Carmen is super touristy and kind of hokey. 🙁 I was disappointed when I visited there.

I have heard good things about Excellence PC, too.  We’re doing Excellence Playa Mujeres, just outside of Cancun as a friend of mine raved about it.  And at the time we booked, we could do 10 days at EPM for just $4k.  The deals in MX were just too good to pass up.  Cancun itself is prob cheesy/touristly, like you said, but I don’t foresee us leaveing the all-inclusive resort very much, except to visit the ruins.  Good luck!!

I just went to Punta Cana in December..stayed at an all inclusive (Magestic Elegance)..resort was great, room was great, staff was great…but the one thing is the Food – i didn’t go in with high expectations but it was even worse than I expected – so bad that my fiance and I bought Pringles one day for lunch and would try to drink frozen drinks to feel up..oh and he got sick the last day- for that reason alone i would never go back to the DR.

a few years ago i staed at the secrets excellence in mayan riviera in mexico and it was awesome.

@lauren – how was the food at the Excellence resort you went to?  Better than Magestic?  We went to a Sandals last year and the food was good – not great, but good.  We def didn’t starve.  🙂

My parents just went to an all-inclusive in Playa del Carmen for a few days… they had a good time, mostly stayed on the grounds and come back with good tans (yeah, I didn’t get THAT gene).

Def do Playa Del Carmen. I’ve had a few friends go to DR just to come home disappointed. They said the food was sub-par and while the beach is nice it’s not really safe to leave the resort.

Playa Del Carmen however….theres tons of stuff to do, food is awesome, you’ll be fine if you leave the resort. I HIGHLY recommend it. I’ve been down to the Mayan Riviera a number of times and I LOVE IT!

The food at the Excellence in the Mayan Riviera was great (considering it was an all inclusive ) – much much better than the Elegance in the DR.

Um we went to the Excellence at Punta Cana and we will not be going back. It was expensive and the food kinda blew for the money. EVERYBODY we met got food poisoning (i literally mean every couple we talked to was like “Yeah i was sick this week!”) including Darling Husband. He was laid up in bed for a day with stomach cramps. But everyone else had diahhrea and vomiting. Not me, but I also avoided a lot of the food he was eating, like eggs. I think the eggs got him.

I dunno, personally, the resort is really nice but the food just wasn’t stellar. The steaks were really low quality and it was all average type food–nothing we’d pay for in a real restaurant.

In general, Punta Cana was only ok. We have talked to some travel agents since then and they’ve said that the food complaints are quite common across the region–they don’t get enough ice to keep things like milk/yogrut cold (they just sat out on a table and we totally avoided them!) and food isn’t served to stringencies to kill bacteria properly (eggs, hellooo!) and that the tourists often DO get sick. The lady we talked to recommended places like Jamaica and Cozumel because while they are more commercialized, they’re also more in tune to the types of foods americans tend to prefer on vacations.

But yeah, food is sub par there. And the pool closes early! That was totally sucky. If food isn’t a biggee deal to you (and you like cheap restaurants?) you’ll be fine. But if you value fine cuisine, you won’t be thrilled!

At Excellence PC there is this weird time gap between dinner (which you eat by 7 or 8pm right?) and the show at 1030pm. Half the time Darling Husband and I had a mojito and passed out!
