Our 11 week old puppy isnt fully housetrained, but we are getting there. He has a pretty good pee/poop routine during the day, but we are having some “issues” with him going poop after dinner. After breakfast he goes poop no problem and then will go again 1-2 times throughout the day. He has dinner between 5:30-6:00 and will not poop for hours afterwards- sometimes not until the next day!
Is this normal? Could he be experiencing constipation? He drinks a good amount of water during the day, but slows down in the evening and I’m wondering if this is contributing to the lack of pooping in the eveving. A couple times it will look like he’s about to go, he will circle and go to squat and then just stops and will go and play or chew grass! We will take him out every 30-hour after dinner giving him the chance to go and he just wont. It’s making it hard to create a routine for him in the evening, which I know pups need and strive on.
I read that 100% canned pumpkin can help and I’m considering trying that tomorrow. Any other ideas? Suggestions? Tips?

He already poops 2 or 3 times per day? He doesn’t need another poop!
My dog poops in the morning and in the evening. Sometimes there’s an extra one, sometimes there’s one or none. As long as she poops at least once per day, that’s fine.

Even as a puppy? I know adult dogs are good to go with just a couple poops, but I thought a puppy needed more throughout the day.

Mine is 7 now so it’s been awhile but I don’t recall her pooping several times per day. Pees, yes! I took her out every hour to get her used to seeing outside before she could fill her bladder and have an accident.

When my little guy was a pup he pooped once in the morning and once at night, sometimes if he had a long day he wouldn’t take the evening poop and wait until the morning to have one large dump haha. As long as your pup is happy and healthy (and poop looks healthy) I wouldn’t worry too much about it

I’ve got an 11 month old puppy. She goes twice a day and always has (if not three times). She goes first thing on her walk and then evening walk but if we go out during the day she will go then too. She doesn’t go after dinner because I don’t walk her soon after eating as it isn’t good for them to have vigorous exercise immediately after food and I don’t want her to go in the garden anyway.
I don’t think you need to worry at all. Although FWIW, I’ve previously given her pumpkin just as a treat, she loves it!

I’ve read that as well that puppies go 3 times a day and gradually taper off to 2ce, but as this thread shows each dog is different. Mine goes 3 times a day most often, sometimes just twice now as he is getting older.
I’d ask your vet though just to be sure!

Mine went 2-3x a day as a puppy, but it varied based on activity level. She poops more the more active she is (in general, when she’s constipated, I find taking her for a 5 minute jog relieves the constipation).

If he’s not pooping in the house and he’s not straining when he does poop, then he’s fine.
Part of creating a routine for your dog is understanding his natural routines. If he’s not an evening pooper, that’s ok.

Our dog (almost 2) hasn’t gotten the memo that dogs are supposed to only take a couple craps a day. She’s pooping as often as a human male! I was just reading up on what is considered normal since my husband insists that she should only need to go out 2x a day (We have a bell by the door that she rings to go out- usually to potty, but also sometimes to sun herself, sometimes to check out who is coming down the street and also to greet strangers. We’ve noticed that she will pop a squat pretty regularly.). Apparently, anywhere between 1 and 5 shits is normal. If your puppy seems fine and isn’t having accidents or needing to go out in the middle of the night, then you shouldn’t need to worry.
