I’ve been shopping around for the perfect stone for a while now and I’m thinking to get the best deal, Im going to have to purchase online. But it seems that most of the online retailers don’t offer the type of setting that I want at the prices local jewelers have quoted me, so I’m thinking of purchasing a stone online and taking it to a local store to have it set.
For other bees that have done this, what was your experience like? And who was willing to service the ring afterwards? One of the great things about buying locally is that the local jewerly stores offer free cleanings and examinations, and will guarentee the ring. But I’m not sure if I will get these same priveledges if I only purchase the setting from them. I’d love to hear any tips, or anything you learned that you wish you would have known going in to the process. Thanks!!
Also, has any one had any luck with the price guarentees offered by a lot of online retailers?

I recently just bought a 0.7ct ring from James Allen, very good experice, and I personally think very good price, they have lifelong warranty too; I love how you can look at the diamond very closly before you buy it. They will do all the service you mentioned, just you might have to send it back.

my fiancé purchased an antique diamond online and had it set locally by a reputable jeweler – it’s perfect! i’ve worn it almost 18 months now without any issue at all. when i need my ring cleaned or checked, i just go to a reputable jeweler in our city and they charge next to nothing to check the prongs and diamond.
it’s really no big deal not to have a warranty on the whole ring, as long as you have a warranty or guarantee on the stone and the setting. plus, once you insure it, you’re covered.

It’s totally common to bring in diamonds from elsewhere to have set at a local jeweler – just make sure to find a highly recommended jeweler 🙂 And if you have a warranty on the diamond through the online store, you’ll be able to ship your entire ring to them no problem & you’ll get local cleaning priveleges – just ask first.

That’s what I’m doing. We found my ring locally. I love the setting, just not the center stone. So, I ordered a loose diamond and am having it set by a local jeweler. He’s going to make my current center stone a necklace pendant. I will follow this thread so that I can easily find it to give you an update after the process is complete.

We did the same thing. We found the band that we liked that would match the setting we had in mind. They were great to remove the side diamonds and add the rubies that we had to purchase separately due to the jeweler didnt carry the right size rubies and also set the main stone that wasn’t purchased through them. I still have free cleanings and inspection along with the warranty. I think the key is speaking with the local jeweler beforehand and ask what their policy is regarding it and all should be good!
