I would definitely be wanting to pay through Paypal, that way you’re protected.  Could you offer to split the Paypal fees with her?  Or offer her 50% by bank deposit now and the other 50% once the dress has arrived and you’ve seen that it’s in good condition?

KiwiDerbyBride:  If you “send money to friends or family” on PayPal instead of doing the business transaction, there is no fee for anyone!

I purchased my dress through a private seller who was only willing to use paypal if I purchased the dress via eBay. I did have to pay all the extra fees which came to $60 more since I had to pay the eBay sellers fee as well. The thing was, I was protected this way. if she didn’t send the dress or if it was not new as promised, then I could utilize both eBay and paypal to get my money back. It was a small price to pay for a guarantee.

mtabride:  unless I’m mistaken, by using that option OP would not be covered by buyer protection in the event she did not receive the dress or if it was not as described.

I would only use a service that provided buyer protection, such as Paypal. What if the dress never arrives? If she truly wants to sell the dress, I wouldn’t think she would balk at the Paypal fees. If it concerns her that much, she could raise the price of the dress to cover them, but I wouldn’t buy it by just sending her a check or something.

I use Paypal a lot as a bridal store and it protects both parties. I’m sure you’ve asked a lot of questions already but ask if any damage or marks and request photos of the dress so you know it matches. Some brides ask for label photos too
