breatheandrelax :  That “study” the article quotes was done by a law firm that specializes in employment law. So they have a vested interest in making people wonder “do I have a discrimination case here?” And the article misquotes it anyway. The “study” said 40% of respondents were “wary” of hiring. Why did the article change that to “40% won’t hire”? Big difference and shows that Savvy has no problem sacrificing accuracy for sensationalism. Nobody cares about your ring, and if they do, then you don’t want to work there anyway.

graduatebride :  I love your story!  Kudos to you for having the guts to do what you did at age 22 no less.  Not sure I would’ve had the backbone at that age.

I guess I’m in the minority, because I don’t wear my rings to interviews.

I have a pretty large center stone (moissanite, but people make their assumptions I’m sure) and I don’t want it to factor in to my salary negotiations.

I think the rings show stability. I wouldnt want to work somewhere with a bias against women anyway.

lightchaser :  3 people thought your comment was helpful.  So, I may stand alone in this.  But, I not only was a paralegal but I also had a best friend who is a female lawyer in the San Francisco bay area.  In my own experience and according to my lawyer friend flashy does not work in law.  But, as with anything there are always exspections.

If you have a large engagement ring, then I wouldn’t wear that, but I would definitely wear a wedding band.  (For reference – Flashy for my area is bigger than 1ct.)  This would especially hold true for a staff position.  People assume your husband is rich and you won’t want to work.  Sounds awful but that is what I’ve seen time and time again.

My boss asks me constantly if I will stay on at least part time.  He is so afraid I’m going to have another baby and leave.

breatheandrelax :  Yes, I would. You want to be sure you’re going to work in a place that’s not like a Mad Men episode. I was once asked what my family planning goals were for a bank job. Totally illegal but I was unemployed during the height of the recession so I didn’t say anything. Thinking back that would have been an awful place to work. This was without a ring too.

So depending on how badly and soon you need the job, I would work on finding a good firm that’s not filled with assholes. 🙂

    Congrats! 🙂
