Depends on where you live. I live in New York City, so I just head over to Chinatown or Flushing and they have a ton of Qi Pao’s to rent for $60.

I had mine custom ordered from a shop in Taipei. When DH and I were dating; we swung by the store when we were on a trip. A year later my mom measured me and I called the store up and we ordered it. It was handmade over in Shanghai and cost around $150 USD.

I recommend calling to discuss with the owner (Miss Ding) over the phone. The pictures of the fabric on her website are pretty true to color even though the layout is kinda antiquated!

They probably want it back within the week. You can also buy them in Chinatown, if you can’t rent it. Don’t know how much they are though. Maybe $100 or so?

I got mine in NYC’s Chinatown.  I paid $350 (including alterations) for a sample qipao; custom started at $450.

@LittleRiver:  Oop, I guess buying it is more expensive in NYC then I thought!

I live in Philly too! I bought mine in Chinatown here at a store called Shanghai Bazaar on Race street. Mine is knee length and 100% silk and cost me $190 (she gave me 10% off because FMIL and her are from the same part of china). They have a big price range $50-$300 (depends on color I think, red ones cost a little more). I got FMIL a blue ankle length Qi pao there as a surprise and it only cost me $60.

Here is a pic of my dress. I forgot to snap a pic of FMIL’s dress before I gave it to her.

It is very comfortable and well made. The fabric is so pretty. It has a little shine to it but not too much shine. Make sure you try them on and sit down in it when you do. I am a size 4 in dresses in here in the USA but in this dress I’m an XL :o…

I wanted to go the custom route but I am not Chinese or even Asian for that matter so I was unaware of the Tea Ceremony tradition until the very last minute. I scrambled to find one online but I felt weary so I took a walk through Chinatown. I love it. I keep putting on and I can wait to wear it in less than two weeks!

@WYAtocha:  She does custom, you’ll have to look at the Chinese site to click aroudn and look at the available cloth samples. She’s SUPER nice… English is so so… I think TW is about 15 hours ahead of us right now (Pacific Time) or 12 hours (EST). PM me if you need help. I’m fluent speaking and hearing but not writing.

I had a non-traditional red dress custom made at it was $300. The traditional one for my tea ceremony was $100.

if you are going to Malaysia for the tea ceremony you should have a relative check whether you can rent a qipao quickly in Malaysia. Most brides in Singapore and Malaysia don’t buy their wedding gowns, qipaos, kwas or evening formal wear for the reception. Everything is rented. If you can go there and get one rented and custom tailored quickly in  a few days you may be able to save some money.

This is depending on your size..the sizes for women there tend to run smaller than in the states.

I bought a cheongsam in Chicago for next to nothing in Chinatown. I had it altered massively in the waist to fit my hourglass figure. It’s super hot but I rarely have occasion to wear it.
