I’m not in quebec, but one of my co-workers mothers did it.

It cost her $17k in legal fees (and I want to say something like 2 years?). So yes, very difficult! You’ll want to consult a lawyer if you want to start that process.

Yep! It is possible. It was very important to her. It was her 2nd marriage, and her kids were already grown, but she isn’t from quebec originally and its more traditional where she was from to take the name.

hopfenn :  It’s almost impossible. It’s not assuming your husbands last name like it is in all other “normal” provinces. Essentially you have to change your last name from birth. It’s expensive and they can decline your request. Really, don’t bother!

I heard you weren’t allowed to change your name. My in laws are from Quebec as is my husband and she couldn’t change her last name, but they got married 20 years ago.

blahblahgirl :  You can, but as we have stated above they make it nearly impossible and very expensive to do so. I don’t know anyone who has cared enough to pay the thousands of dollars and spend the time at a lawyers office to bother
