@APerfectSonnet913:  What do women who work in that office generally wear on a day to day basis?

I think you should at least wear a jacket.

Wear black tights or nylons. I cringe at bare legs. I have never worn a suit to an interview and I’ve always been hired. Nothin’ wrong with a casual dress or skirt and sweater. I wore black skinny jeans once and was hired on the spot. I do live in Oregon tho!

Edit: The job interview in which I wore skinny jeans was for the financial aid office at a university. FWIW.

Etiquette Snob here…

And with news you probably DON’T WANT TO HEAR… sorry.

Hose… if you wear a skirt, you need to wear some sort of Hose… Pantyhose etc.

Sucks but it is part of a “complete / put together / professional” look, and you could be judged on it negatively otherwise.

If you really don’t want to wear hose, then opt for dress pants vs a skit.

Hope this helps,

* The good news is once you actually HAVE the job, you’ll most likely be able to ditch the hose, as they aren’t required in most offices.

What type of company is it, and what position are you interviewing for? That can make a huge difference.

@APerfectSonnet913:  Find out – that might be just fine, but you want to step it up one level from what people generally wear at the office, unless they already dress at the peak of business formality.

@APerfectSonnet913:  University?  Unless you’re on the west coast, you need a suit.

I’ve gotten every job i’ve ever interviewed for, and I never wore a suit. A pencil skirt, nice blouse, and tights are my “uniform” for the interview, as well. I think you only need a suit if it’s a very formal office.

I’d purchase a suit.  It’s good to have anyway if you’re going into a professional field.

If you can’t do this, I’d ditch the sweater.  At least then it might seem like you WERE wearing a suit and just ditched the jacket prior to coming in, especially if it’s hot out.

I think you’re OK with what you want to wear in that case (but with the hose, like PP suggested). 🙂 At my company we require suits but it’s also an IT company so we tend to be more formal (aka boring!) All work places are different, I have a friend that works at a university admissions office and she wears the type of outfit you described so I think it’s fine! Sounds pretty. Good luck!!

I always wear a suit to interviews (black pants, black jacket, and a colored shirt).  My opinion: tis far better to spend the $100 on a suit jacket at Macys than to not get the job because the interviewer thought you were dressed to casually.  Also – I work in academia, FWIW.  We have had several folks interview (for faculty positions) and, despite knowing the persons CV beforehand, appearance still makes a HUGE difference!

PS – OP – good luck on the interview!
