My rules of thumb:

I either put in a caption (Photo source: CNN or Jon Smith, AP)

Or I use a click through link to the original article

I think either is fine.

I’ve also been told that if you change the image drastically so that it is not recognizeable, you’re fine.

I would say that either way works. Though as a photographer, I’d prefer if someone used a text link for my images.

And now I’m feeling guilty because I never paid attention to the sources of my first inspiration board. Embarassed

If you’re putting it on your page, and hosting it for people to see, what you really ought to do, to be correct, is get permission for use from the photographer/news organization that owns the photo.

Blogging doesn’t count as an example of fair use, which means that you really need permission to use things. Even if you give credit, that doesn’t overstep the copyright issue.

@bluesgirl I can’t help but wonder how many of the bloggers here have done that….  ask permission to use said photos, that is.

@Zinzerena Probably very few, if any. Most people think that if they find it on the Internet, it’s free to use. Which is very much not the case. There’s the right way to do things, and the commonly accepted way… sadly, most bloggers take the easy and common way.

I always link back to the source. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you copy the original image url you’re using the original poster’s bandwidth. If your blog get’s heavy traffic (or if the image is from a smaller site), you should re-upload the image yourself before posting it.
