One of my good friends is a freelance cosmetologist and she has done my hair and makeup many times. I was hoping she would be able to do mine for our wedding, however, she’s going on a trip out of the country the month of my wedding, but doesn’t have the exact time span yet, so she can’t give me a definitive answer about if she can do it or not. Should I give her a little time to find out or just seek someone else out? The wedding is the 2nd week of January.

@JacobsMama: I think she should know by now when she is going.
I don’t know what to say, if you hire her, you are a customer, and as such, she should make an appointment and keep it.
Talk to her now, and if she doesn’t have an answer by the end of next week, try to find another person.

Yep treat this as a professional matter. Either you can reserve it 100% or go with someone else.

I say treat it in a professional manner. If it were me, I’d let her know when the wedding is and give her a time frame to get back to you about when her trip is. I used to do makeup, and stopped doing freelance several years ago. I’m doing my friend’s hair and makeup for her wedding in a month, and we just did a trial today. I offered to give her my standard contract (i still have it saved – it’s similar to a freelance contract I use for teaching, so it’s useful to me still). I also treated our trial as an appointment – I confirmed a few days in advance. Sure, we were way casual today, but I want her to know I take it seriously.
