I read a lot of problems on here about BMs not placing their orders on time, or not at all so I want to make sure I do this the best way possible.
First question: Is it important to order the dresses together so they are from the same dye lot? The dresses will be black, and may be different styles but from the same designer. Black is black, isn’t it?
I have one bride living out of town. If the dye lot isn’t important, I can get her to order the dress in a local shop near her.
For the girls that are here. Should I order the dresses for them and have them pay me? Or should I get them to order themselves?
I have one flaky bridesmaid who is nearly impossible to talk to through text, phone, FB, person, etc. I haven’t spoken to her in months because she doesn’t return any of my calls or messages. I have the worry that she may drop out of the wedding – but that would suck if I order her dress and she does that. But I feel I’d be entitled to ask her to pay me back anyway. (And I don’t think I would order a dress for her until I got her OK – however, if the time comes and I can’t even get ahold of her… I’d probably just have to choose a dress and order it for her).
So what’s the best way to do this?

Personally I let my BMs order them themselves. They span a bit of a distance (about hours apart by car) and to make one come to a specific shop to pick up seemed mean to me. So I just had them order what they wanted from a designer in the specific colour. All have ordered other than my MoH but each picked their own shop where they got the best price for the design and its at a good location for them to pick it up when its ready 🙂 And it was that shop that did the measurements and specifics for ordering the size.

@MissKit: some places say dye lot is important, others say it doesn’t’ matter that much. To be safe, I’d order them all at once and from the same shop.
Just have your girls get measured locally, then call into the bridal shop to give them their measurements. Once all the girls have called in their measurements, the shop will place the order. I picked all the dresses up and distributed them to my BMs, and mailed them to a few who didn’t live nearby, since it was going to cost them $25 to ship them from the shop. It was cheaper for me to do it on my own.

Location for the other three isn’t a problem. They both live within a 10 minute drive from my house, so I’d even offer to pick them up.
Hmm. Okay. I will have to think about this. The one who’s not in town lives in the US (I’m in Canada) so I’m not sure how much shipping will cost.
