I’m jewelry incompetent. I have no idea about 4Cs. I don’t even know how big my diamond is. Hahah. All I know is that it’s platinum because of what I was told – since it’s a family heirloom.
So, Fiance and I went shopping for my wedding band last night. We found the perfect platinum band to go with my engagement ring and the saleslady started talking about the getting my engagement ring polished. The new band is obviously more shinier than my engagement ring from the 1930s. She also brought up rhodium plating and how I should possibly get it done if polishing doesn’t make my engagement ring as shiny as the new wedding band. The only thing I do know is that rhodium plating is usually done with white gold. I have never heard it of on platinum. Could someone possibly explain this to me? I am not wanting to go through with it regardless, but I kind of felt like she may have been trying to pull a fast one on me. FI felt the same as well. Perhaps we just don’t know enough! Any education will help for future references! =)

@Rouquine: I have never heard of plating a platinum band…thought that was the whole point in getting platinum…..but yes getting it polished is common and will do wonders!

@JessMorgan777: That’s exactly what Fiance and I said. I was thinking in my head “yeah, okay lady… I don’t think so.” I remember reading bits and pieces on here to make me more aware of what she was saying. Thank goodness I paid attention before. Even my friend was baffled by what she said.

I’ve heard of plating only for people with sensitive skin. Sounds like she was trying to upsale to me.

After Googling it, apparently some jewelers do it because it’s easier than polishing the platinum.

A jeweller suggested it to me once too as apparently it means you won’t need it polished so often, but I like the patina that platinum develops so I said no.

@Peony007: Interesting! Thanks! I felt the same too. FI was worried that maybe it would ruin the ring.
@mepayne: Laaaazy. 😉
@SpecialSundae: Oh okay. Yeah, I don’t feel comfortable messing around with it anyways. I love it the way that it is and don’t mind if it’s not as shiny as my band.
