It’s not only wedding dresses, but clothing in general gets more pricey for plus sized gals.  I know in Target the some shirts are about $2-$3 more for plus sizes.

Yes, as PP said, it is common, and it makes sense! Bigger size = more fabric = more $$! Your friend was rude about it though, but I don’t think it should be considered rude/illegal/unfair at all.

Yup! Some lines do charge more for us plus size girls. Pronovias usually does but waved the upcharge for me. I was glad they did because I was gonna act up about it! lol

Edit: I was gonna act up not because of the charge but because of what I went through to find the dress (read my dress shopping nightmare) I completely get more fabric = more money.

A lot of bridal designers do charge extra for plus sized gowns. The larger gowns need More beading, More fabric, More work and thus More expensive.  But a few places dont charge extra, I think Alfred Angelo doesnt charge extra. just ilke  pp stated tall women have to pay more for extra length too. I’m 5ft 11 and if I had decided to wear heals I would have had to pay more for extra length but thankfully I opted for flats and my Mori less gown is just the perfect length for me.

Its common to charge a little bit more for a bigger dress or whats considered plus sized. But its not a ton more.. Im a 16 and I didnt have to pay any extra. It also depends on what stores you go to on what size they start some stores start charging more for one size when others do for a different size.

Makes sense.  High quality fabric is expensive–if your dress needs less, why should you pay as much as people who need more?

Larger ring sizes cost more than smaller ones, too, because they require more precious metals.  Same idea.

Oh, and I’m a little irritated with your description of your friend as “abnormally skinny.” That’s every bit as obnoxious as calling a plus-sized girl fat.

I agree 100% here. Plus, at 5’2″ and 120 lbs your friend is smack dab in the middle of “normal/healthy” BMI range.

I don’t understand why people get so worked up about this. It makes complete sense when you think about the materials and labor cost that go into making larger items.

Also, to add, I wear a size 12/14 so in bridal sizes a 16+. My dress however was made to measure so my size didn’t affect the price. If I had gone with a “sized” gown, I probably would have had to pay more and I would have been fine with it.

Yes, you need to pay extra due the fabric. It seems reasonable. I’m a maggie bride and am 5’10. I was on the cusp. If I wore 4inch heels, then I would have had to order a tall length. The talls had an additional surcharge – I think it was around $350ish, but dont really recall. I decided to go with lower shoes 🙂

Yup! anything size 18 and up is more money but why would she feel the need to say that to you?

@Mrs.MedinaJr: Agreed.

OP – your ‘friend’ kind of sounds like a shallow biatch.

I’m a street size 16 and 6′. when i am in weddings they always charge me $50 more for bm dresses; extra fabric and extra length. Sucks when the dress costs $250+! I get it, but I hate it b/c when I get the dress and it needs to be taken in more than a size and it is longer than everyone else’s it is annoying!

btw, i never had to pay more for my bridal gown
