So, I just got back from my dr’s visit. I am now 4 months pregnant and I have gained close to 10 pds. I am really not happy about this and feel like it’s too much. I have a light breakfast, on occasion, for lunch I eat a sandwich and fruit. My problem is at my current job, which I’m leaving in 2 weeks for good, I have a really early lunch time where it’s so early by the time I get home in the afternoon I’m starving again, so I will eat another lunch. I’ve added fruits and we’ve started eating more homecooked meals, but I have def upped my food intake and also started eating more junk food, which I rarely eat. I felt like I actually wasn’t getting enought caloires which is why I started eating more. The good thing is once I’m not working, I can start eating lunch at a normal time. I also drink a ton of water now, which I didn’t before. It’s wierd because I can still fit into like 2 pairs of my size 6 pants, one I can’t button I can only zipper them lol but I still wear them and my jeans are all getting skin tight so I wear stretch pants alot now. I also noticed that all of my coats and jackets hardly button and feel really tight on top, so I’m thinking either my boobs got a lot bigger or I gained most of my weight in my upper body. So my question is, could this be mainly water weight and not actual fat because I’m not really showing yet, I just look bloated? Also, do you gain weight all over or is my waist and stomach that’s going to keep expanding?

You may find this thread of interest. Really, everyone is different in how and where the weight gain happens. My breasts didn’t really increase in size much but I know a number of ladies on these boards did have that “gain” in the first trimester. My body happened to go for the all over bloated look in the beginning and around month five started rounding out the belly. If your dr. wasn’t concerned with your weight gain, you should relax and not worry too much.

At four months I had gained about 9- 10lbs. Now at six months I’m at a 19lb weight gain. I started out really small though, so I don’t think it’s too much for me. This chart is pretty consistant with everything I have read:
Blood 3 pounds
Breast 2 pounds
Womb 2 pounds
Baby 7.5 pounds
Placenta 1.5 pounds
Aminotic Fluid 2 pounds
Fat & Protein 7 pounds
Retained Water 4 pounds

Oh, I don’t weigh myself. I guess it’s unavoidable at doctors office but I don’t otherwise. Yes some of it’s water
At 13 weeks I’d gained 5 lbs. Now I’m almost at 4 months and I’m guessing I’ve gained a little more this month since I’m showing more than I was a couple weeks ago. Everyone seems to put on weight differently and at a bit different times through pregnancy.
If you’re eating healthy and making time to exercise I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Your weight gain doesn’t sound unusual. My pregnancy books said 1-5 pounds during the first trimester and then about 3 to 4 pounds a month for the rest of pregnancy. All women are different in how much weight they should gain (depending on starting BMI), how much weight they do gain, and where they put the weight. And it is possible that some of your weight is from bloating. Just keep trying to eat healthy. 🙂
