I would think you would have to have suppoting documents for the name change.  I would phone the border crossing you’llbe using and confirm

She should be fine with just a passport.  When in doubt bring a copy of the marriage certificate and driver’s license on the very small chance they ask for it.  I have never been asked for extra ID when showing my passport either going into the USA or Canada.

MrsRuby:  as long as it’s still valid and the photo looks like her, I don’t see why they would know it’s her maiden name or question it. However, probably best to double check with the authorities.

It couldn’t hurt to have it if she’s worried, but I’ve travelled from Canada to the US many times and I’ve only ever had to present my passport….so as long as her picture looks the same, they won’t question it/know that she goes by a different name.

ETA: Her passport is from 2006…how long do American passports remain valid?

I’ve heard it’s only an issue when you fly since your passport needs to match the name you book your tickets under. I just received my new ten year Canadian passport. I thought I wanted to keep my name but now will likely be changing it once I’m married and I have to pay for and order a whole new one.

I flew for a a year with both my maiden and married name depending on which form of ID i felt like using.  If I can fly with 2 names, she should have no problem driving acrross a canadian border and  fine with the passport in her maiden name since its a valid passport.  It’s not like they’re going to as for a social to check what her “real” name is now.
