I don’t think it really applies any more. I don’t wear white personally because I’m a clutz, but I wouldn’t think anything of someone wearing white after Labor Day.

Carolsays :  winter whites are the best! I’m a partly French lover of fashion so can tell you with some “expertise” that its more than fine to wear white in any season

I personally don’t wear much white because I am a slob! But I see nothing wrong with wearing it whenever you want 🙂

I visited my grandmother in England in winter once and I had a white bag. She was saying ‘oh but you don’t want that bag, it’s winter!’ and I was so completely confused as I had never heard of that before. So unless you’re 90 I really don’t think it’s an issue haha.

I rarely wear white because its a damn awkward colour but I wear colours depending on mood/situation/event not season

Carolsays :  I think the “rule” has relaxed some… Wear those whites post Labor Day! lol

I definitely think the rule has relaxed. I just wore white pants last night to dinner! I live in a super hot/humid area – and even at night it’s usually too dang hot to wear my white pants. I’d never get a chance to wear them if I didn’t wear them in the fall.

I have a couple white sundresses that are casual to wear any time of the year. I think it really depends on the material and design of the outfit.

The rule is because typically white clothes are lighter fabrics and more summery (like white linen pants). But now there are a lot of white clothes in other seasons like winter white coat or sweater. I don’t think it’s really a rule anymore, I mean most people aren’t going to wear white linen pants or white shorts in cold weather so it’s really a non issue.

That rule is not only relaxed, it’s outdated. White is now appropriate all year round. As PPs say it has more to do with the fabric and cut. A light cotton halter top or linen pants aren’t really going to cut it in January in most climates.

This rule has been outdated for a while. Fall is alll about neutral tones.

I think it’s all about how you wear it. White jeans with a cranberry sweater, for example, would look great and not summery at all. A white eyelet sundress would seem quite summery.
